"will learn about the challenges and lessons learned when creating a full-blown MMO for kids together with a ground-breaking new business model; and how developers can re-educate their teams to move from stagnant and dated MMO design toward mass market success."

Har, was there ever a better pile of steaming stuff to bring tears of joy to the eyes. We can't make anything quality and original so lets give it away and beg for spare change at the lower end of the market and get some money while we can, even though the real devs and designers know it's a load of s**t, you too can strong arm people who actually know more about the 'product'

Remember guys, it's all in your interests. All those games that are failing, it's the payment models fault, not the folks in charge who blew all that money on second rate WoW clones. Don't blame them, trash the product instead, and by the way, want to hire one of them to wreck another project? Plenty spare. Oh the joy :)

Maybe it'll be a lesson in how to ruin 3 mmorpgs, release a crap one and then take on 3 other crap ones and have lackluster subs. SOE isn't about making great games but just trying to screw over and milk their customers.

only thing John Smedley will be able to do is teach you have to speak in doublespeak, and say alot without saying anything, and the most important phrase when an MMO is about to be thrown down the tubes, "we have no plans at this time" and what that phrase actually means and does not mean

Actually, I would love to hear him talk about their target audience.

While Free Realms has a very typical chat/guild system their younger audience is not allowed to type in chat. They are given canned comments/questions/answers to use to communicate to try and reduce the amount of kids screaming their phone numbers in chat (has actually happened twice now).

While that seems ideal it makes the parents who play with their kids very frustrated unless they can be in the same room when playing.

This game is ideal for kid/parent co-op because of the casual yet challenging mini-game selection (and the fantastic graphics) but there are too many hurdles to jump over when playing.

The game needs more "family" options.

Yes, because out of the many bright and talented people, we'd love to hear from the retarded fish who swims in the darkest parts of the barrel, which is the only reason he isn't the one shot.

I hope he shares his thoughts on how you take a massive IP like Star Wars and turn it into a steaming pile of dog crap that next to nobody plays.

Dear John,

You've run SOE into the ground.

The games you produce are no longer generated from the imagination of the talented people you have on staff, they are more the playthings of bullish management types who lack credibility.

The thing is the 'stagnant' old model MMO, World of Warcraft, is something you have chased relentlessly and never got anywhere close to it's success.

Before you start preaching to others about how to run games, why not take a good hard look at the following

Everquest - repetitive paid expansions, little integration into the old world, no overhaul, left to die, you first customers neglected for sooo long now. I felt truly embarrassed to watch the announcements at your recent NerdCon or whatever you call it, when they introduced yet more of the same. You've ignored calls for this to be THE free to play game... I give up on this one, sorry...

Everquest 2 - Started poorly, got really good, then you just let the player base leave through neglect, now a shadow of it's former self.

Vanguard - I'd be surprised if there were more than 1000 players total logged in at peak times

Planetside - Only one server now, life support

Matrix Online - Canceled, this was never a finished game.

Free Realms - Millions of people who download a client and try it once or twice, is not going to make any company rich or successful. This game was invested in at the expense of all other IP's

The Agency - Staff walkout, when exactly is this one coming out John, and is it still an MMO?

Star Wars Galaxies - SOE owe a debt of gratitude to Raph Koster for producing such a great environment, and heading up the team that produced the initial game. However senior executive management fucked with this, pushing it out early.

Then lying to your player base and breaking the game to retain income, only for that to bite you HARD every time you open your mouth. The only way you can make this pay now is to make people pay for shabby loot cards and by adding kitsch housing decorations. A true embarrassment. This is what happens when pride takes precedence over common sense. I don't know how you managed to keep your job through this John, let alone give speeches?

Pirates of the Burning Sea - Who ever green flagged the acquisition of this should be facing jail time. Pitiful.

DC Universe - What happens when you get your best developers working on a high value IP, combined with the leading industry art talent, hmmm.... it appears you remake another popular game and make it look worse, even though you own the IP of the most recognizable elements of the genre, mind blowing....

People here know I knock AoC and Warhammer Online, but seriously John, those guys might be complete cockmunchers, but they've got nothing on you...

Smedley hating aside, it'd be nice if BioWare's MMO studio would send a speaker to GDC Austin, since their studio is in the same area. I'd like to hear some details on the mechanics of making another Star Wars MMO, with comparisons to lessons they learned from seeing how SWG went down. You know, some nice gameplay lecturing, without the usual "Storyline Pillar" stuff that we've heard non-stop since TOR was announced.

I can't believe they are paying money to this man to pat himself on the back.

Why would you invite the most hated man in the MMO world to speak? Are they going trick him and then to tie him down and throw rotten veggies at him?

That would certainly attract favorable attention from the MMO community! Send it secretly to small groups of people, then have the sign hidden.

He goes on stage, then someone runs up on stage, lassos him, ties him up like a bull and hangs him from something like a pinata, where we begin to pelt him with rotten eggs and fruit (some of which hallowed out to put in the diareha of sick bulls) gas masks handed out at the front counter.

If anyone they should have Bill Trost and Steve Clover up there, as they were the people behind Everquest and what made it a success (which is what made SOE a success). All Smed ever did was hire his lackey friend named Brad McQuaid to suck up all the accolades for which he did nothing to earn. It's little suprise that SOE has managed to be the caretaker of almost every welfare MMO out there today.

The funniest part of all is that the "file under" tags of this story include world of warcraft but NOT SOE, Sony, or any of SOE's games.
