We're very happy with all this Final Fantasy XIV news lately, and at the same time are fairly amazed it keeps coming so rapidly. First it was the removal of levels and experience, then info on the new race names and jobs. Now, Square Enix has updated the official website with new information on the Eorzea and its races' history as well as the job system. Plus, there's tons of new screenshots, so let's dig in!
For instance, we now know that players may specialize into four differing job branches however they see fit, also known as forging a Discipline. The four are: Disciple of War, Disciple of Magic, Disciple of Land and Disciple of Hand, which correlate to melee combat, magic combat, gathering crafting materials and crafting, respectively.
Then there's Guildleves, which is a way for players to tailor a quest to their party makeup, whether that be themselves or a larger group of differing job types. If players attempt a riskier Guildleves, the reward is also improved as well. So it would seem that, interestingly enough, Final Fantasy XIV may be looking to attract people looking for all sorts of difficulty in their MMO.There's also a small entry concerning one of the three main city-states in the game, Limsa Lominsa, although the other two have yet to be detailed. And that's still the case for much of the game. Although we have been able to glean one important thing from the website update: It appears as though changing jobs can be done on the fly, or at least without having to go find a nearby Moogle as is the case in Final Fantasy XI.
We're happy if that's true, as it means the team is thinking about ways to ease the playing experience of their next MMO without simply making leveling an entirely solo affair. Hopefully, we'll have further information to report to you from PAX.

Very interesting that they are revealing so much so soon.
Somewhat disappointing that there are no new playable races (/genders within race).
Remaining curious but skeptical about base gameplay evolving, namely that non-combat jobs will feature actual gameplay (ala free Realms) and that the freeform job system won't a] be undone by obvious race/job combination optimization and b] potentially take race/job-fascism to even greater depths...
Player A: Hi team! All ready?
Player B: Are you ok tanking?
Player A: Actually I just unlocked this sweet mage job and I'm looking to level it today.
Player C: But you're the Roegadyn. Just switch to tank and let's go.
Player A: I like playing mages more.
Player D: Roegadyn are the worst mages. Think of the team!
Player A: I really just want to play as...
Players BCDEFGH: YOU'RE THE ROEGADYN - BE THE ******* TANK!
Actually that's getting a bit off-course - really I'm just waiting to see if the general gameplay is anything new or all threat manipulation, death penalty and hour-cooldown teleports.

I hope there's not the same race tendencies that there were in FFXI. I absolutely hate the min-maxing mindset in MMO's.
I also sincerely hope that the best items in the game don't come from standing around a spawnpoint mashing a TargetNearestNPC; CastInstantSpell; macro all day.

There is a rumor that there are more races to be revealed, but it is just a rumor!! Also in the race's lore nowhere does it say there are uni-gendered so perhaps the make/female versions that are currently missing will be added, or they will be in game but not playable.
Base race stats will be there but they won't have such a radical effect like they did in FFXI, I'd expect it's more like EQ2, they will be there but generally who cares? :p
As for the Roegadyn they do have a tribe or a group who specialize in magic... XD

Without having read the website yet, I'll guess Limsa-Lominsa is the Lalafell's home city. It has a rhyming style that reminds one of the Taru Taru's naming convention in FFXI.
With all this info coming all at once, doesn't one get the idea that XIV will be launching sooner rather than later? At this rate of info release, we could potentially see XIV before the end of the year.

The Guildleve system reminds of me of the monster hunter guild in FF12 where you grab contracts from your guild and gain rewards and tokens for completing these contracts. Except there will be more variety in Ff14 then just notorious monster hunting.
I am worried with the armoury system they say that when you change your weapon this will not only change your class but your looks? Say what? Are armors now tied to weapons? I level in FFXI just so I can put on different looking armor... So to me not being able to pick my own sets is a little weird. Though I guess it's cool if your looks is tied to the type of sword or staff you have..
Hmm.. But I do love the Mi'qote's cat eyes!!

Well the first thing I noticed was that awkward sentence
"Such a marvel is proof not only that god exists, but that they love, and that profoundly."

This made me cry a little bit inside: "Even today, he woke at dawn to spend the daylight hours drilling relentlessly on the tiny wildlife just outside of town."
That pretty much reads 'He was grinding rats for hours in the newbie area'.
I thought MMOs were over the whole pest extermination thing?

Don't read into the "day in the life of leeroy" too far. the 'spent the day light hours" sentence might refer to how the time passes in FFXIV 1 game day is about 1 hour earth time. so spending the daylight hours = 30 min.
And jesus it's not like you sit down and play a MMO or any video game for 30 at a time anyways. I'm willing to bet that anyone who posts here plays at least 1+ hours at a time many 3+.

I'll agree with that, but that comes with the territory. I don't mind a grind - but, in response to Drossrocket - I never said anything about time spent, I was pointing out that at lower levels we'll still be killing garden pests, which seems out of place with most modern MMOs - in which you start off feeling at least slightly better than an every day exterminator, even at level one.

If you look at the latest interview on Eorzeapedia.com, you'll find that the focus is far more casual then FFXI will ever be. :) Also there's more particulars about the job system and equipment. They also completely dodge the question of whether there's more playable races to be announced by changing the subject.... ^_^
There's more customization options at character creation, 'cause FFXI's is rather sad... You'll be able to pick skin color, eye color, face type and hairstyle, there may be more..

guildleves looks like a brilliant concept, even more so than public quests. rather than make more difficult quests open for anyone in the area they've made quests scalable with the group, or lack of, that are accompanying you. can't believe this isn't part of all MMOs
