Tateru -

I was going to spend a little more time on that actually, because I think you're absolutely right - the Lab has definitely moved past that phase when the 'tools ruled'. The strategic direction and management over the past year has been far more thoughtful and seems to have a nuanced view of the interlinking of brand strategy, policy, and technology. (Not that Philip didn't, it's just that the balance is definitely different).

Having said that, my particular post was meant to focus on the fact that this kind of cultural framework is, probably, always there to some degree. You can't expect the coders or the people at the front lines to change their stripes over night, and yet we still see evidence that 'tools rule' (or go see your lawyer in the absence of them).

So, I agree - there has been a significant shift, and tools are more frequently deployed within the context of strategy (a more hierarchical approach than before). But there are hold-overs (the bulk perm change thing as an example).

In any case - great post, Tateru. Malaby's book gave me so much food for thought and I'm glad to have your take on it as someone with a history and a perspective that's unrivalled.

Another fantastically insightful article, Tateru on "insider perspectives" that we average residents would never otherwise know. Thanks!
