There definitely needs to be a balance. I think using some sort of route planning that GPS programs use could be implemented into MMOs. Basically once you go from point A to point B, the route shows up on your map travel and you are then allowed to "teleport" from A to B.

Then there could also be a method of instant travel for those who do not have the luxury of playing MMO for the whole distance from A to B. This method could be RMT item.

Anyone who says traveling is "just time-consuming rather than difficult" never played original EQ. Getting from Freeport to Qeynos without a teleport (and even the teleport deposited you a twenty minute walk away from Qeynos) was one of the most harrowing experiences in the game the first time you did it. There was no map of any kind in the game, there were dangerous mobs everywhere, and of course your soul was bound back in Freeport, so if you died 10 feet from Qeynos you would have to do it all over again naked - and hope to god that you could remember where your body was.

I also miss the pitch black nights. I recently returned to EQ just to try it out again after years of disgust with WoW's care-beary gryphon rides and light gray midnights, only to find that EQ had taken the same direction. What is the world coming to!?
