The only tip that matters: abuse search. Seriously, search anything that tickles your interest in any way. You'll find it. It's the only reason I log onto SL these days, but damn it's always fun.

Are you sure setting the disc cache that high is clever - isn't there currently a bug with the way SL currently handles disc caching (let alone the appalling way it currently handles image caching)? It's been pegged lower in more recent versions of the client for a reason - the SL client just doesn't juggle the cache the way it should, setting it higher (usually) does no good at all.

I'd also suggest newbies avoid buying anything for a week, minimum. Look around, see what there is. Play with freebies. Use search, Showcase, and get the opinions of others about the best looking places and avatars in SL so you can get an idea of what's possible.

Most SL screenshots really don't show nearly the level of what's possible, so most new users start with very low expectations. With all the freebie resellers and business in a box start-ups, if you start buying stuff right away, you might feel like you've wasted money once you've got a better idea of what's out there.
