In any game, I like to live fantastic and die young.

That means that i typically gravitate towards the rogue. Ever since pen and paper D&D, I've just fell in love with the play style. for me, its not about the sneaky (though that is fun) for me its the challenge of fighting up close and personal whilst being lightly armed and armored.

I like any character that is agile, quick, and clever.

SWG was a smuggler (as well as SWTOR when it arrives).
WOW was rogues and cat form Druids.
In Eve, I trend towards Gallente and Minmitar.
In FPS's, I'm the guy in the top three of the kill charts but also with about triple the deaths of anyone else. That guy running through the door with a live grenade in his hand? That's me. :)

My alts are almost always healers. I suspect this is out of some cathartic desire to repay the debt of stabbing so many people in the back.

I tend to try a little bit of everything, but in the end I'm often drawn to some type of rogue, a healer of some type, and / or something unique.

I'm an altoholic as well. While I usually play mage type classes first, to get me through to the endgame, I will always start playing any and all of the other classes, as long as there is a character slot for me. I tend to really not focus on slow combat classes though. As LOTRO has a few of those, Guardian and Burglar just bore me. Same with Black Orc and the dwarf counterpart in WAR. However, WoW and EQ2 gave me some fun classes to tank with. So basically as long as I feel like I am doing damage and quickly than that is what I will play.

Healers are also dependent on the game too. I actually liked Minstrel in LOTRO alot and the healer classes in EQ2 and WAR are pretty fun. However, WoW healing wasn't so fun, as it really gimps you damage wise.

I love hybrids. No matter what game I'm playing, I always end up with a class who can multi-task.

What does SCH count as?

I guess I typically like support roles. DD produces cute numbers but I feel like it's usually a bit insular. Tanking seems like it would be fun, but there's way too much attention for me. Nuking's ok, but similar in many ways to DDing.

So BRD and SCH it is! I much prefer to be sort of behind the scenes, sleeping stuff and buffing people, keeping HP up and generally making sure things go smoothly while not drawing a lot of attention.

I try a bit of everything in new MMOs I play. If I settle for something it typically is something that have multiple types of fighting-related activities.
This is assuming the discussion covers fighting, which seems to be the case with most posts so far.

So anything that is just doing one type of activitiy (e.g. doing damage or healing) will probably not be played much. But if there can be a combination or various activities doing damage, healing, crowd control, buff/debuff and all of that requires conscious decision during the fight, then I am more likely to play it.

But there can also be non-fighting activities tied to it, if there are restrictions on what various classes/archetypes/jobs/professions can do outside of fighting.

Raising/maintaining pets and crafting consumables would be two types of non-combat actitvities that would be more likely to be chosen.

It varies from game to game what class I prefer to play.

I generally gravitate towards melee classes, though. My most recent favorite has been to play as a melee healer - Bear Shaman in Age of Conan, Chanter in Aion.

I try to pick stuff with more than one role to avoid boredom, or classes with a lot of group buffs.

I used to always roll an archer, but then I fell in love with a healer, and then I found a tank pretty fun, and then.....

I play elementalists (or mages, whatever they're called) because they usually die quicker, and as such require quick thinking, and if you try to just spam attacks, usually you die pretty quick.

Almost always a pet class

In UO I had GM taming
In EQ I was a Magician, and later a Beastlord
In AO I was an engineer
In WoW 2 of my mains were Hunters

A few exceptions, Shadowbane, WAR, and DAOC (all games I quit prematurely... probably should have stuck with pet classes)

Looking forward to Spiritmaster in Aion

I usually play whatever looks the coolest. (Pretty shallow, eh?) Most of the time this tends to be the Warrior/Knight types, but also Rogue/Assassin types as well.

If there is anything close to a Necromancer that is usually what I'll play first. I have an unhealthy obsession with undead minions....(I think anything related to the undead would be considered unhealthy actually...)

I also like Archer types WITHOUT pets; No DAoC or WoW Hunters, more like DAoC's Rangers/Scouts and WAR's Shadow Warriors.

Or any class with a unique game-play element or style.

Also, I like to solo, so whatever solo's well is also an important factor. In group environments I hate tanking, I hate healing and I don't really like DPSing all that much, so that doesn't really leave much in terms of class selection. That is why I tend to solo.

In DAoC I was a Necromancer. Also had a Savage and Reaver that I enjoyed.
In EQ2 I was a Necromancer and later an Assassin.
In AO I was a Shade.
My main in WoW is a Warrior.
In WAR I play a Choppa, but before they were available I was a Black Orc and sometimes a Witch Elf.
In AoC I played an Assassin, Necromancer and Demonologist.
In CoH/V I was a Scrapper before Villains came out, then I was a Mastermind when it did. (Three guesses as to what type of MM I was.)
In FFXI I played a Warrior, but I always wanted to be either a Summoner, DK or a Thief/Ninja.

Countless other MMOs I've played seem to follow the same class choices...

Yup, I always play the caster classes. Failing that, I'll play any ranged dps class.

Way back in the days before personal computers, I used DICE to roll my first character in D&D. (We still have a shelf of manuals to prove it.) That character was a druid/priest/healer type. 30 years later - still playing healers.

I tend not only to gravitate to the same types of classes (melee tank/DPS hybrids) but have recurring characters that have existed in a variety of incarnations.

Heraclea was a character I drew long before I owned a computer. Her first incarnation was in City of Heroes, as a tanker. She later became a WoW warrior and an AoC conqueror. She exists in Guild Wars as well.

The only MMO that I have ever played that did not include her as one of my alts was LotRO; she did not fit the setting. For that MMO my main was Samhall Gaolster, a burglar. I abandoned that game mostly because I saw people grinding out quests to get points for virtues like Compassion and Courage - forget what they were now - and the nasty little hobbit I wanted to play seemed an unlikely candidate to ever be endowed with those sterling qualities.
