You can tell most of commenters are kids that grew up with the internet. They think they have the Net-given right to say whatever the hell they want and never have to face the consequences.

I love it when a topic like this comes along. "Accept me!" the 'persecuted' cry, and oh how they do! The thing about acceptance is that, like respect, it has to be mutual. You want me to accept you being gay? Fine, no problem. But, if you want the world to stop using 'gay' as a perjorative, stop referring to us as 'breeders'. Oh, you don't? But some of you do! So, if some of you do, then all of you must be lectured at about tolerance.

Same goes for race, don't like the "n" word? Don't call me "cracker", "honkey", or "white bread". Don't want to be clumped with stereotypes? Then quit using them. Don't demonize a tv show for portraying what you perceive to be a stereotype, when you have the stereotypical uptight, klutzy white person that you laugh at.

Christians are being persecuted in a country where they refer to muslims as a kind of pestilence or demonic horde, hell bent on destroying America. Women are the victims or gender bashing and gender stereotypes, yet if you watch tv, men are routinely portrayed as blithering idiots and man children, incapable of the simplest task. Even young boys are not immune from being stereotyped as the messy goof, ever failing to his much wiser and tidier sister.

Can we all just grow up and stop pretending that we're innocent victims? We're all guilty of the same crap in one form or another.

I play Eve Online and although there's a few young players, they all know that pirates use rough language and jokes about people's manhood or lack there of are part of the hazing mentality. Its the same attitude that adolescent Halo players exhibit when the teabag the vanquished opponents.

I have heard many players called gay and far worse, but its not because of their sexual preferences.

When teenage football jocks and wrestlers turn their angst to the enemy (sports opponent) they need to form a mental image of the enemy as being detestable.
This attutide becomes confused with male bonding rituals and is often evident for years after the teen grows up.

These verbal attacks, while annoying and disrespectful, are not real homophobia and we waste our indignation by focusing on it, because in the end it does not matter.

We need to all make sure that our sexual complexity (and we all have that, don't we?) does not adversely affect youngsters who may be just forming their self awareness. It is not fair to use gay-bashing as a way to antagonize your enemies, and as we grow as gamers we begin to learn that MMO's are about cooperation and focused effort.

Calling names is not productive, and experience will teach those who today scream "fairy!" in local chat to anger an opponent that in the long run, they are just branding themselves as an arsehat.

Further, I consider players who do not use gay-bashing as more mature and likely to be reliable than those who shout in local.

As CEO of Crimsom Templars, I turn down most applications, because, as the scriptures say, "many are called but few are chosen."
