I wouldn't mind DF if it weren't for the pvp-idiots, who just pwn for pwning sake (as described in Colins' initial Goblin fight). It is something else if you are a different faction, or so, but to hang out in the noob area to pwn, come on!

But yes, this is another way of MMO, in e.g. EQ you would group with the stranger to kill the Goblins.

Then again, the way to get your skills up is a problem in any skill based game. UO - stand and kill for hours. Woppie! Now how is that "skill" to stand and grind like that? In my few hours in DF I saw a few peeps standing at a wall in auto-run mode to get the running skill up. Wow, big deal.

Good for all you who like DF, it's just not for me, I guess I became a care-bear nowadays....

I have played Darkfall on the EU server. I quite the game within the first subscription month. Why? The DF community for some reason seems to attract the lowest, uneducated teenage scum who flow like a cesspool and thrive in it's murky world.

If you enjoy associating with these twats on a daily basis then this is the game for you, otherwise, do youself a favour and save your hard earned cash and join a game with a real community.

have to disagree here.

in darkfall i have met some of the most intelligent, observative and fun people ever.
and i'm counting you EVE.
the problem is... they are NOT in the global channels. at all. ever.
they stick to clan, alliance, maybe public once in a wile... like in any other game.

so as for communitie on the forums, please, stay out of general discussion. Darkfall PvP and politics are VERY much alive on forumfall (forums) and half the information pumped there is propaganda and deceit to keep numbers rolling and advantage up.

if a group of mercanaries that get paid thousends to defend a city during a siege get defeated and post "yeah, we suck"... how many would hire them after? so they fight, lie, cheat and spew propaganda all over.

as for general discussion, 99% of trolls are not playing the game, and with the subscriber only forums coming soon (ie: month-to-3 or so) it should solve that more so.

so, if you find yourself wonders WTF this communitie is, join a clan becouse below the shit-spewing fest that is forumfall and global chat.. lie some very smart and mani[ulating people that are awsome to play with.

This game seemed interesting until i read the part on how all your gear can be stolen when you die. I have limited time and i dont want to have to grind just get back lost gear just so i can lose it again. Im sorry if i wanted reality then i would not be playing a game in the first place. :P Its to bad this game could have been interesting.

I heard this was an all PVP MMO but I thought I would try it out anyway. After downloading the game via a Torrent, I found out I still had to pay the lame $50 bucks as if I had bought the box. I should have known I was heading in a bad direction by paying for a game developed by greedy people who couldn't deliver on their promises. Anyway I downloaded the 9gig file (lucky I have super fast internet with Comcast) and installed it.

Once installed I tried to log in and it keep telling me my user account info was wrong even though it was correct. After numerous attempt at doing the same thing over and over again like an idiot it finally worked. Then I tried to log in and the it said it couldn't connect so it dumped me back to the desktop to do this all over again. After about 10 tries I was about to give up when the game logged in.

I got into the game and the graphic were beautiful. After 3 seconds of admiring that I found that the game lagged like pig on fire stuck in mud. So I dropped all the video setting down as low as they could go so my Geforce 8800gt with 512megs of memory could run the game. When you try dragging a compass or your healhbar across the screen and it lags you know the game sucks.

Once I got the game so you could move with less lag I realized that there would be so little PVP/RVR with groups over 20 people as the game would lag so bad. So what now? I don't know and you won't know because there is no tutorial and good luck finding quests. After asking the 5 people who were on the server where a quest giver was I finally found him.

The funny thing about PVP servers where it is a free for all, people are just plain rude and total jerks. If you met them in real life they would treat you well, but in a virtual game they just piss all over you. So finding the quest giver took me getting past the rude people until someone nice actually answered me. Of course this person killed me later.

Trying to talk to the quest giver was a chore as the UI is strange and unfriendly it took quite awhile to figure it out. So I got a quest to kill goblins and all this text just sprawls all over the screen with no background making it really hard to read and disappears before you can read it all. The quest giver already gives you this info in a box you can read so I don't know why they do this.

So I get ready to go off and hunt goblins but from other MMOs I have played I know that you have setup your quick-bar in order to be effective. So I attempt to do that and man there are a million worthless skills. So you end up scrolling through a horrible interface trying to find the skill you are interested in. Then the skills go up in such small increments like 1.3 that I just shake my head as it all becomes meaningless when they tell you that your skill increased from using it.

Setting up your key binds is a really annoying as they have strange programmer names like a_auto_attack. Plus the only way to be in third person is with your weapon drawn, which makes it easy to accidentally kill NPCS if that is the mode you prefer.

So off I go after the goblins and wow is walking really annoying. You run and stutter and then you run and then you stutter/stop and it makes horrible noises. Jumping makes even worse loud noises when you land after a nice 1 foot jump. So you will want to turn those sounds off.

So I get out to the field where the goblins are and two players have killed all the goblins, I mean all the goblins and are camping the spot for them to pop. Didn't anyone learn anything from EQ?? Guess not and since they were camping the spot they killed me. I become a bandit for attacking another player, which I am sure means the guards don't want me around town. Once I died I had to sit and contemplate the game as it took forever while a loading screen danced before my eyes.

Well lets sum up this total turd of a game that you should avoid playing.
1. Overpriced.
2. Lag, lag lag.
3. No real large PVP/RVR as the servers can't handle it.
4. Even the best video cards will choke on this game as it is not well programmed.
5. Horrible UI.
6. No tutorial.
7. Pointless skill system.
8. Bugs galore like login system.
9. Horribly rude people.
10. Very few people on the servers.

I would say that this is the worst MMO ever developed and I doubt that it will make it more than a year. I will guess that it will actually run out of money in 6 months.

I'm not sure exactly why it's lagging for you. I have the same card as you, and I get 74 FPS on all high graphics. Do you have a fan on your card? I know the fanless models can get really overheated, especially on this game. I have a fan model, and it sounds like a windtunnel most of the time because of how fast it has to go during Darkfall. (Just Darkfall though, other games don't generate nearly as much heat.)

You're doing it wrong.

Turn off mouse smoothing. Turn off "post process".

Darkfall runs super super smooth on high settings on my rig.

Good luck finding a game that lags less when you get into the hundreds vs hundreds that this games does all the time on eu-1.

Hi Colin,

Nope I have a fan on my card and my hard drive is 10,000rpm on an Intel Quad Core system. I have no issues with other games with graphics maxed out. It might be a bug with the game at the resolution I run at 1920 x 1080.

Hmmm... try running at a lower resolution... that's probably what's doing it. The 8800 is a very good card, but I've noticed that the more I push the resolution, the more it begins to strain.

Darkfall is turning my card into a wind tunnel at 1024x768. Other games, like Crysis, run great at higher resolutions before turning my card into something that loud. Darkfall, however, does not. I'm convinced it's something in the coding that's pushing the card much, much more than it should be.

But try reducing the anti-aliasing and other post-processing effects if reducing the resolution doesn't help. The shadows, in particular, gave my fan a wonderous break. Of course I turn them all back on for the screenshots, but you get my drift.

Does the anti-aliasing actually work now? I couldn't even force it in the driver settings previously with my 8800GT.

Oh Rhodri grow up it is a game, not real life. It doesn't look anything like real life, your Orcs and elves. If anything the fact that you can up cliffs and people are sitting against walls running or guilds are killing each other to grind up skills makes the game pretty funny.

People tend to say a game is bad if they can't figure out how to get it to run. People also tend to say the game is bad if they have a bad system or don't know it is probably some setting they don't have set right.

NOW,

I will 100% agree with some of the comments above, there isn't much at all in the way of quests.

People are pretty much allowed to do what they like in the game, just for example a country in the real world would, however, there are consequences. For example if some 8 year old is being a jerk and constantly griefing people eventually players get smart and get together to take care of it. There are a lot of jerks in the game like people said above. Actually that is another reason I like the game. Get some friends, a couple, a few hundred or whatever and take care of it.

An above poster mentioned no large scale PVP? That couldn't be farther from the truth. It is the only game out that can come close to handling 100 people on a screen close up and in the distance etc. If your computer/vid card can't handle it, that is more of player side problem. I played at the start of EU-1 and I still remember seeing my first huge battle 100's of people hacking slashing casting. On vent kept coming news of more and more huge guild amassing their troops to join in and boy did they, over the hill would come another 50 players riding mounts to add to the Mayhem.

This was 6 months ago and there have been many improvements to server stability. Those first weeks of the game and huge battles did come with some lagg, quite a few disconnects etc, but things are better now. I wouldn't advise getting the game if your system is an older system. I also wouldn't advise getting the game if you don't plan on playing on the server near you. Ping rates of over 200 will probably not be very good in huge battles or when split timing decisions are needed.

About Ping, I had about 230 on the EU server and the game was still enjoyable, but I am very looking forward to my 100 ping now in North America. The servers for NA are located on the west coast. Some examples are 30 ping in LA and 100-120 ping anywhere East coast.

Also another bad point about the company is their communication with players. For example they didn't say a word to the community until the minute the server launched from their first announcement. They also, again, charged players another 50.00 to buy the NA client after they had bought the EU client previously if they wanted to play NA release day one. I personally wasn't happy at all with that. Others were fuming and rightly so.

Lastly, that is another reason you will get people trying to spread false statement about this amazing game, they are mad and feel cheated for the above paragraph. It is constantly debated if other companies follow the same practice or not. ( I personally don't know ). Adventurine was extremely vague when they released the EU server, most of us figured we would just start up a new character on NA release with our existing account. If I had been properly informed I might have still purchased the game on EU release, but a huge amount wouldn't have ( Why they feel cheated ).

If anyone has a question on specifics of any part of the game, post and I will try to answer in an honest way.

Lastly! This game is not for everyone, especially if you are laid back or don't like an open system where the players make the laws in the game up pretty much. You are pretty safe in your home Cities:)

I agree with the earlier poster who more-or-less said 'I'd hate to play it, but love reading about your adventures in it'. It reminds me of Steve Hill's NeverQuest! PC Zone column. Keep up the g- the ba- the, umm, work... ;)
