This sounds completely unappealing to me - pretty much reinforces my opinion that PvP-centric MMOs are the wrong direction to take. I've just never gotten any enjoyment out of it. Always seems to bring out the worst in online gamers.

A WEB BROWSER for your quest log? My mind has just shut down.

And using guild mates to raise your stats in "safe" dueling? Holy exploitable!

I'm generally with Neura, in that open PvP games are just havens for people with poor social skills acting out their domination fantasies on people who would kick their asses in real life, but the writeup was a great read!

1) Yes - the in-game web browser stuff sucks.
2) Some would call it "sparring", not exploiting. I think that's fine as long as there's a pretty low cap on skill gain via sparring, but there's not, unfortunately. So, yeah, it's just another cheap, easy "tactic" for getting max skill in minimum time...

I don't consider the idea of fighting your guild mates to level skills to be exploitable. If you want to learn Judo, you don't go running out and start attacking people at the bus stop. You get together with like minded individuals and practice on each other. Sounds perfectly reasonable to me.

It will be like the EU server. A few weeks of "cold war" style stand offs with everyone afraid to start the fight, then all hell will break lose.

If you think safe dueling is an exploit the original version would really boggle your mind.

Well this doesn't lift my interest in playing above 0%, but I am very keen to read of your continuing adventures.
Or your continued bricklaying.
Whatever.
Just so long as you keep countering the barbaric hordes with your genial conduct and inappropriate outfits.

I always enjoy your wit and cynicism, Colin. Can't wait to hear part two. You might want to think about just turning this into a regular Darkfall column; people love those "it's so bad you can't look away" stories.

ah... the first three weeks.

get some enemies with that clan and your dialy harvesting will be.... less... slow.

at this point in the NA game it's as follow

- No cities with miines that give 3000 iron ore a day.
- No farms with 30 steedgras a day (for mounts)
- No exploits get 50k an hour and then get full infernal suits in the first two weeks
- no skilling up on newbie weapons
- no skilling up on people with the respawn shield

so i pitty your first 3 weeks of server up... i really do.
You should have tried Eu.
joined a clan there.

wel, done is done, but yes, the first 3 weeks of me were much the same... but.. with war.

we had 20-30 raids rolling into our "town" (rubble) a day trying to kill us and take our recources.

eu-1 acually just got HUGE war. i spend 18 hours in single sitting 100% in PvP.
then i spend a day recovering by stockign up as i'd wasted 6 sets of armour.

Great observations. I enjoyed reading the article. Almost makes me want to fire up my account, but I refuse to buy DF again to play in North America.

DF has a certain charm about it. I'm not quite sure what it is. I think the art direction is unique and the game is beautiful at times. I like the different races, and mounts are incredible. I may take a look once Aventurine transfers my toon to the NA server in 3 months.

For now, I've bought a Mortal Online limited edition and I'll see how the two stack up against each other.

You forgot the jerkoffs like me that paid 50$ for this game and cant login and once I can get in my ping hovers at 50 for about 15 minutes and then in the middle of a fight after i collected hundreds of gold worth of loot the ping shoots up to 12k and the game crashes with a nice little lost connection to the server message(2) When I try to log back in it issues me a temporary ban for logging in too fast. Once i do get back into the game. I have a leafcutter blade in my bag and the text from what someone said 2 days ago in chat. This game is fucking garbage No support, except for the fucks that are quick to ban badmouthers. This game is the most epic of all fails. Other games may suck but at least you can log in and stay in....

This... commentary and the numerous poor opinions by folks that have played have further cemented my belief that this game is utter rubbish.

Everything from the community playing to the company developing have only served to completely turn me off.

I can't think of any other game that has this affect.

The game is amazing. The play is for those few gamers left that don't like content handed to them. This is ultima online on steroids!!!

In game you constantly read chat and raves by 95% of teh player base that can't get enough of how good the game is and how no other MMO delivers what Darkfall does.

If you want PVP in it's rawest form, go to drakfall and don't look back. If you are use to the hand holding that games like WOW and EQ2 have got you use to then by all means stick with those games.

I pretty much believe the writer of this review will most likely get turned off by any challenges he faces and give darkfall a bad review. Who can blame him, the masses want and demand easy mode and the game handed to them.

Let me put it this way, darkfall has a strong and extatic player base that raves in game how this is the best game that has come out in a long time. Why? Because ut doesn't hold your hand. If you get mad at someone you can exact your revenge, you don't have to worry about game mechanics getting in your way. This is real life in a virtual world!

95% of the players enjoy and have fun in darkfall. Those of us in game laugh constantly at the new guy that comes in and believes the game is unfair or just too damn hard. This can be blamed on the hand holding of every other MMO out today.

If 95% of the players are doing just fine and are enjoying the game and you find it too hard, take 2 steps back and think to yourself maybe you need to get out of your shell and step up to the challenge of Darkfall. Darkfall doesn't hold your hand, and give you stuff for free, you have to earn it! GASP!

If you are sick of the easy mode todays games are going and want a challenge, come join the players who llive and breathe darkfall!

If you want the ultimate freedom of no holds barred pvp you must check it out. No other game today even comes close.

That all being said, the game has a few downfalls, the stunt they pulled with making us pay for a new North American client was pretty much bs. You know what? If a game is that good that someone can kick you in the preverbial nut sack and you are still willing to pay them 50.00 to do it, they have something great going on.

Do NOT! Try darkfall if you can't adapt.
Do NOT! Try Dakfall if you like having your hand held and think hey if I help someone they shouldn't be able to stab me in the back.
Do NOT! Try Dakfall if you think a game is too hard for the first 5 minutes, you are special and the game is singling you out while the other 98% if the server adjusted and are having a blast.
Do NOT! Try darkfall if you like quest after quest telling you what to do, how to do it, and sends you across a map, kill 5 mobs come back, collect, rinse and repeat.

However, if you can adapt, like a world that pretty much let's you do what you want, just like the real world, then keep your eyes on this one.

DO NOT be fooled by reviews by people that can't handle adapting to a game or have grown up on hand holding PVP.

If you want freedom, love pvp, and want a game where effort ='s reward then check it out!

Original player on the EU servers. I enjoyed the game for a month. I take issue with your statement Iginio Shaw however, this is not Ultima Online on steroids. Ultima Online had content beyond spawn camps. Yes DF has content, but it is very little to talk about.

"Do NOT! Try Dakfall if you like having your hand held and think hey if I help someone they shouldn't be able to stab me in the back."

So it's good that a game aids and abets, actually encourages this kind of behaviour?

"This is real life in a virtual world!"

If that's the view of the majority of the Darkfall playerbase, we have a serious problem. No ethic or moral codes to adhere to, kids encouraged to kill someone just because they're there, or worse after being assisted by them. Really, it's quite sick.

When I was playing on EU, I'd tend to do a quick gather of a single node for the clan at login and then carry on with the fun stuff. Why join a clan that's sole interest at this point is getting a city and forcing it's members to grind resources? Or is the grind optional? If not, find a different clan. A city isn't the be-all, end-all of the game, though many think it is.

But then mining ore in high spec space or running around a map looking for respawning nodes to craft tier gear, of metal ore or wood, or whatever in other games, is of course, action packed fun....... :)

Games that have consequences do tend to have grinds, but that's part of the point I guess, you have to work through the good and bad together as a team to get the most out of them... well mostly you do, or you can try and ninja stragglers, it's all part of the game. Good with the bad, that kind of crap. It's like real life I guess, you don't appreciate nothing unless you've had to work for it.

Nice balanced article, seems fair enough in it's points and written by someone approaching it with an open mind one way or the other - which makes a refreshing change, looking forward to the rest.

I actually want to try the game itself now, and I am aware the game will have a lot of bugs at the moment but I can live with that. Ultima online with steroids - w00t :)
