luckily quite a lot more than AOC. And more than enough to have more fun than AOC could ever offer.

At the very leasf a silly and overblown instancing system doesn't make the population seem even more scarce.

They somehow managed to make the PvP balance worse with their patches since release which was sad. Casters dominate everything all the while being so much easier to play. Not to mention the game still had problems for me, and still ran pretty poor, worse than crysis does for me. And sure, I finally got a kind of stable 40 FPS on the "Raid/PvP" setting but the game looks like ass then. They still haven't fixed the issues with textures just popping up out of no where, and other textures being muddled and bland because they didn't load in.

Plus the community sucks hardcore. It feels like they're even more delusional than WAR fans, proclaiming there game is hardcore and if you don't like it to "GB2WoW".

To be honest I did not last long in the 2 week win back, maybe I lasted a little over an hour.

Balance-patch incoming tomorrow. There were bound to be some imbalance when they practically reengineered the whole stats system in 1.5...

I haven't played AoC since a few weeks after launch. I've been hearing that things have improved, so I figured I'd give it the re-evaluation a go. Here's my thoughts:

1. Stability is good -- I haven't crashed at all, even after a 4+ hour play session. I do get a weird message sometimes when I start the game, something about validating files and what not, but I've skipped it the last few times with no ill effects.

2. Tortage is still Tortage... Really quite fun on the first go, but painfully boring after that. It makes trying out new classes a real turn off. Apparently everyone gets one free level 50, but I'd rather just choose my create my character and have them start at level 20 in their homeland.

3. Graphically, the game is a mixed bag for me. Gorgeous scenery... But for a game that bragged about it's sexy/sensual setting, the characters are just hideous. Saggy breasts, tiny heads, with 1 young face per race/sex and the rest old/ugly. Gear is boring, puritanical, and seems to look all the same for the most part(at least from level 1-30). Animations for the fatalities are entertaining the first few times, but the rest looks sloppy and awkward.

4. As someone else mentioned, the community is unpleasant at it's best. People will stand and watch you fight your way to a goal, and then swoop in and steal it as you're fighting the last mob. Level 20s farming level 5-7 picts in White Sands while the level 5-7s run around hopelessly trying to complete quests.

Overall, the experience has been a letdown. Performance-wise, the game has come a long way in the last year. But it's still not worth subscribing to for me.

Not a strike: Sound skips in the opening cinematic (I considered this an improvement, since the sound AND video used to skip)

Strike One: Bad texture and enemy pop-in (ie after being attacked)

Strike Two: "You cannot mine now because you are in combat" after being ambushed while mining and killing the mobs

Strike Three: Lag death

Diagnosis: FAIL

*Quits AoC, goes outside*

...

Strike Four: AoC process still running when I get home that night

I did give it a re-try, but turns out I was sadly looking back through rose-tinted spectacles.

For some reason I thought I lacked the 3(or5)-keys-for-an-autoattack gimmick, but I REALLY hated it this time round.

The fights just felt so darn long as well no matter which class I tried - WAR slow - so apparently my combat pace sensibilities have adjusted over the many months since AoC launched.

Simply couldn't find a motive to stick with it, so uninstalled 3 days later.

I don't really get the thing about the instances being immersion breaking compared to lotro and wow.
Lotro is loaded with instances.
WoW is loaded with instances and what can be more "immersion breaking" then the frequent case of not being able to zone into their instances because they can't keep their servers in line.
Yes there are load screens when you take transport from one area to another but I'll take that over a 15 minute griffon flight to get somewhere any day.

Is the issue when you talk to a npc the view changes for the dialogue so that you can see the npc's reactions to the dialogue tree answers?

The global chat channel is pretty brutal though. If you can stay out of that channel I've found the people in the game are generally pretty decent. If you pay close attention to the global channels it is the same 5-10 people stiring up crap in them for their personal entertainment.
Every game has the same kind of chat in its channels. How bad it is depends on the level of moderation, not necessarily the games population in general. If they removed more of the moderation from the EQ2 level channels they would be epic in stupidity. They are already really nasty at times with people knowing that a ban is only a /report away.

There just isn't much wrong with this game anymore. If you bother to read the quest text the questlines are interesting and not a complete snoozefest, the combat is fun, the itemization finally makes sense, the game runs pretty smooth, the cities are populated, and it looks fantastic.

The pvp might be a mess, I don't know about that tbh. What mmo has balanced pvp and solid pve content at the same time?

But in AoC you can be standing next to your friend but not see him, as the instances are global, not limited to group/personal spaces.

In LOTRO, for example, you go off into an instance "by choice" - i.e. after speaking to the NPC/entering a doorway, you scoot off into your own version of that specific dungeon by yourself/with your group.

That's the difference.

Sorry to see a few people didn't like it - hopefully a few at least thought it had improved a lot since launch. I'm currently playing a mixture of AoC and LOTR but once I've finished levelling my main on LOTR I'll probably stick to conan full time. It's just got more life to it. (LOTR is a fantastic game though, although at the other end of the playing style from AoC)

Like all games it has it's fault, personally I think overall it works but then that's just me. You can't convince others on matters of taste. And yup, there is the major bug of the ever so slightly painful OP of ranged casters, but I'll dare say they'll get the nerf at some point.

I will stand up for the community though, as although it does have it's trolls (which games doesn't?) and if you know enough to play these games you can figure out how to hit ignore. It's only the internet and who isn't a hero sitting at home in front of a keyboard :) A lot of the time it's funny.. ok, some of the time.

I really like the fact that it's a kind of 18+ thing and with that you are going to get the odd tool who takes it too far but I'd rather that than a sterile 'safe' environment. Still fun for me.

I installed it yesterday. Uninstalled it today. I just hate the combat system in AoC. It didn't change at all in a year's time, so Funcom will not be getting my money.

Definitely the most disappointing MMO I've ever played. Makes The Sims Online look like WoW.

EQ2 has the same thing. Guess I am just used to it.
I acutally prefer that system.
