I totally agree that this would be a good thing for newbie SLers. When will we actually see this go live? Well, let's see... based on past experience with the Linden development cycle, I'd say this will be ready for prime time in November of 2017.

For christ's sake, the download isn't even 50 megs.

Indeed, for Windows it's generally around 35MB or so, and under a minute to download. The comparatively meager size of that download and the (*ahem*) difficulty of clicking through the installer (next, next, finish) is commonly raised as a criticism, however.

Click icon, drag into applications folder, click open. What need of a lengthy installer?

I note that none of those screens focus on the "build your world" aspect. It's more of a "consume" message, no?

Indeed, none that I saw mentioned content creation at all. I suspect that this setup program is not targeted at people who have any sort of DIY inclinations.

The marketing bites are (I think -- I should check that) served up from a website, so they can be changed as required.

The vast majority of SLers barely every build anything I suspect...so it's not exactly surprising.

I take it you're a Mac user Marianne. ;) Things make more sense with a logical computer like a Mac :)

I suppose it is all the better for people creating content to sell though. :) Worse for LL if they continue their 'get rid of old users and get new ones' strategy though.

Ah macs ... I love being able to have several different SL clients without worrying about them all wanting to default to c:\program files\Second Life.

5,000 educators seems like an odd number. There are way more than 5,000 educators involved with Second Life... do they mean 5,000 concurrent educators at any time? I'm curious where that number came from.

Hmm... I hear when looking for reliable metrics, Tateru Nino's plurk page is the place to go =D

Seems like this could be just another way for Linden Labs to keep info floating in front of our faces.. maybe too may ppl hitting F1.
