Ys Online has entered its open beta phase of testing, but for now, the game is still only available to European countries (The full list can be found here. Countries not found on the list are IP blocked). This open beta is a little different to most in that there won't be a character wipe when testing comes to a close, meaning that characters will carry over to the game's launch. Those interested in playing just need to create a Key to Play account, download the client, and log in -- no special key necessary, despite any confusion caused by the name of the game's portal.
According to the Ys Online forums, Key to Play is working on opening up access for more countries to play. Perhaps another publisher will come to the rescue and bring the game to the rest of the Ys-starved world?

And why should anyone care about this title?

You're right about the name Fester. They had referred to it as YS at one point which I thought was strange too, but it seems that most of the time they are indeed using Ys. Thanks for pointing that out -- I've updated the post.

The screenshot disturbs me: It appears to show a fat woman swinging a battle axe at a .... what the Hell is that?

Well that was the easiest region IP-block to bypass I've ever seen...
Anyway, the game is your typical Asian-style grind-tastic MMO. If you like Anime style (I don't), and don't mind a mindless grind (again, not my cup of tea) you'd likely enjoy this game. However, why you'd pick this one and not the million other clones out there is beyond me...

So, yeah... I don't get it.
Got it all set-up and given it two tries no, but this is about the most unpolished open beta product I've ever seen.
Fine text dialogue & chat window on bright backgrounds, always-inverted camera controls (never even seen scroll wheel controls inverted before), no WASD nor arrow keys, no explaination of card concepts or whatever the points are that baddies yield - and the 'tutorial' seriously consists of walking along a lonnng empty path with a few near-invisible text pop-ups?
That's a few hours of my life given to the game, and I'm no closer to understanding what it's features are or how it differs from any other point 'n click grinder - I think it needs a bit more work to make the right first impression.
