"You see, when you attack in FFXI, it locks you into a slow walking animation"
Not true. It only slows you down if you are locked onto a target and walking backwards. You can easily unlock the target and run away at full speed.

I know on keyboard, you can hit the asterisk (*) key on your numpad and it'll unlock you. Not sure about gamepad. Oh! Don't forget to get yourself a nifty exp ring (Emperor or Empress bands) from your home nation guards! They'll give you a nifty little boost in exp % for a bit. Gogo 18 and subjob!

Just in case you didnt know, unlock on the xbox controller is accomplished by clicking in the left stick. Also as above poster stated you want an emp band as soon as possible, and you can also spend 700ish points for an instawarp scroll, which combined with repatriation (which sends you to your home nation for 50 tabs) lets you put stuff up or get stuff from the auction house in a pinch much more easily.

And dont bother paying conquest points for the empress/emperor rings, just do the tutorial quest given by the guard in your home town:

Alaune Southern San d'Oria (G-10)
Gulldago Bastok Markets (D-11)
Selele Windurst Woods (K-10)

They npc will give you a voucher for a free ring, then proceed to buying the ring from a signet casting guard like you normally would, it'll show up as 0 cost.

You also get a raising earring and some xp and gil for going through the chain of errands.
