Totally agree with pretty much everything in this article. Good read.

MMO game designers and video game developers in general, please, PLEASE, take note.

While some of your customers could care less about audio, there are many who do. Do not underestimate the effect of good audio, including music, sound effects, sound quality, ambience, voice, etc. This can make or break a game to me.

I'm still waiting for a few games to step their audio up before playing them, *cough* Runes of Magic (Character voices, better spell sounds, incidental/environmental sounds, music, etc.), *cough* Free Realms (Character voices - SOE, tap into your EQ2 talent! If Wizard 101 can have fully voiced npcs, why can't FR?), among others.

Good gameplay is king, and pretty graphics are great, but seriously, MMO game industry, it's time to step your audio game up!

Great article, and some really important observations. The section that resonated with me the most was the idea of "gradiated", or "stepwise" music for epic battles, that progress to higher and higher levels of tension in a fight. EQ did that really well, and that shows that the composer was really thinking about the impact of his music in a gameplay format.

I was actually talking with several of my friends (we're each writing music for an MMO), and we were talking about the idea of having different themes for characters, based upon their morality/alignment. For an MMO player, that could be really cool; if you're playing a good knight, your music would be suitably heroic and noble, however if you turn him evil, your music actually morphs into darker and more frightening tones.

This conversation comes from the same place as your observations in your post, Brendan; good audio helps to give the player a feeling of drama, tension, and excitement. And, for my experience, I like it when games that I play give me those feelings.

Thank you again for a great post!
