Good write up. I'm also becoming pretty interested in APB myself. As for shooting mechanics. I would rather have a twitch shooter rather than the pseudo-realistic style of the "Call of Duty" series. Don't get me wrong, I can enjoy Call of Duty as much as anyone, but for shooting mechanics, I'd pick Return to Castle Wolfenstein over Call of Duty any day.

I'd rather be gunned down by a skilled player who beat me honestly, rather than some random camper who shoots you in the back twice and kills you because of "hardcore" mode. I call it insta-gib, because that's really all it is. And before anyone calls it "realistic", the game abandoned all hopes of being realistic when they added perks.

Juggernaut lets you survive while standing on a grenade. Double Tap magically makes your gun shoot twice as fast. Deep Impact magically makes your bullets travel through walls better. Stopping Power magically makes your bullets do more damage.

But my favorite is Martydom. A magical and active grenade spawns ontop of your body when you die and blows up your killer. Wow very realistic.

Did I just turn my comment into a rant against Call of Duty? Wow, what a loser.

Um I went off on a tangent. I am looking forward to all of these shooter MMOs. Hopefully a few of them will do well enough to survive. We don't need or want another TR on our hands.

If they do it right, they can count on me.

Just looking for a GOOD FPS interface on an MMO.

I don't care about genre.

You forgot to mention Huxley, which is actually quite a bit better than Crimecraft after seeing both in action. In fact, Huxley is looking like it will be a very good game. Crimecraft, not so much.

There is also Fallen Earth although the shooting in that is somewhat rudimentary.

Earthrise is coming as well but I'm not quite sure if it has manual aiming or selectable targets.

What a lot of people don't realize is that most of these MMOFPS games will still be RPG's. Many of them still have levels, gear, and quests. Those RPG systems will make them much less balanced than the typical multiplayer FPS games. This may annoy many FPS fans.

You also forgot to mention Global Agenda, which looks to be at the top of the heap for these sorts of games currently.

Crimecraft should have never been put in the category. Ugh terrible.

You also forgot to mention Planetside, the first MMOFPS to make it to maket and COD: 4 was by FAR NOT the first to blend these things together, it was probably just one of the best made ones that did.

MAG is the only game that give me hope at the moment. Its the only true "big" shooter coming up. All the rest of the games all have much smaller caps on people fighting. Huxley is going ot cap it at 100 last i heard, APB will limit you to 100people per city, MAg is the only game that is truley "Massive" with 256 players. But its ALL backtracking from Planetside with 400ppl all fighting at once. THATS what a MASSIVE game should be like. Thats the one reason planetside was so fun, i dont want to pay extra to have a game where we get some common area to "meet and greet". I want 1000ppl in all types of warmachines killing eachother for some common goal! Thats a MMOFPS!

COD4 was certainly an evolution of the competitive FPS, incorporating many of the persistent elements that these MMOFPSs are based on. Another game that deserves mention as a further refinement of this idea was Resistance 2's cooperative multiplayer. Beyond character progression, the co-op mode in Resistance 2 played out much like a dungeon in a MMORPG. To my knowledge none of the forthcoming MMOFPSs take this tack in their PvE encounters and I'd like to see it explored in a larger, more persistent environment.
