We all have a list of favourite games which we think should be MMOs. My first real exposure to RPGs was The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. I absolutely love this game and it's top of my list of titles (or in this case a franchise) which needs to be turned into an MMO ASAP. Logically (and as a games journalist) I know it's not that simple. I've interviewed several folks at Bethesda over the years and I know that their vision of The Elder Scrolls wouldn't translate too well to a Massively Multiplayer Online game.
But that aside, I'm pretty sure most gamers are stoked that Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is being reinvented as an MMO. I want to know, if graphics, dev wishes and game mechanics weren't an issue, what games would you like to see become an MMO and why?

though i would have no interest in playing it, I think Pokemon would make an excellent MMO.
once again, Battletech would be great. Operating your own company withing the Inner Sphere or the Clans, jumping from planet to planet, mech customization and a heads up display that would actually make sense to have. The trouble is, as stated above, with the legal mumbojumbo.
The Cyberpunk genre is pretty ripe. I expect it to be the next big push and we'll probably be hearing a lot about games in this genre in a year or two.
THQ needs to make Warhammer 40k. I want muh Powah Fist! This would make WAY more sense than Starcraft. How the hell do your play a Goliath?
I dont think baethesda should make anything, MMO or otherwise, ever. The dialogue they script is awful and their animators are probably fresh out of high school, or just got their degree online at best. BTW thanks for ruining Fallout. The gameplay from 1 and 2 were bad enough, way to wreck the story as well.

Warhammer 40K Online is currently in development at THQ (Vigil Games). It's a newly created development studio, so who knows what the quality will be like? I hope it turns out well, but that seems doubtful given how many - experienced - MMO developers have failed to deliver as of late.

1. Castlevania
2. Pokemon
3. Final Fantasy 8
4. Legend of Zelda
5. Baldur's Gate (or NWN)
My comments on each were far too long, so I ended up making my own blog post about it. If interested, check it out at http://www.thewanderingrogue.com

I was wondering what a MMOG based on *Tron* would be like. The designers could go wild and eschew the laws of physics because it all takes place inside a computer.

I'd love to see an MMO set in Oddworld.
How about an MMO in an underwater civilization, an Aquanox/Bioshock hybrid?
And ... I keep telling those ATITD guys, instead of retelling their story over and over, next time take their game philosophy and DO RED MARS ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Mars )

There's several games about a manga/anime that i revere so i guess it fits in this category:
My ideal MMO would be a One Piece MMO.
A pirate themed MMO, with FFA PvP based on guilds (this case Pirate gangs) that could build their own boats to travel around this world and with some crazy PvE against the Marines and the World Government.
If it wasn't a grindy borefest like most Asian MMOs it would be my favourite game.

Oh man...I didn't even think about it, but a Planescape MMO would be amazing. Absolutely amazing. The gameworld is unbelievable, the possible story lines, the races, the possible classes...I'm getting happy just thinking about what COULD be.
As a huge Elder Scrolls fan, it would not work as a MMORPG. It would work as a single-player game that can go online, but not as a MMORPG, at least as long as the typical RPG formula is:
pick up quest->grind out quest->get xp-> level up and so on.
How about Assassin's Creed, anyone? The game has set up the two separate factions, similar to the Horde/Alliance and Sith/ Jedi. It has a lot of potential. The combat system could be tuned to be very interactive and skill-based, there could be many different classes (ranged, melee, "technical" like gadgets, healing, and so on). Guilds could put out "hits" on members of the other faction, have bases, full scale battles between the two factions. I think that is another game that could be made into a great MMO. Perhaps the time setting would work best at the modern time. I don't think enough RPG games are set in a "modern" setting.

There is an Elder Scroll MMO. It's called Mortal Online. Or at least that's what the game is turning out to be from what they keep posting here on Mass.

Planescape MMO.
The Planescape 'universe' is ideal for an MMO. You got this huge, ever-changing city of Sigil that has doors to all other worlds in existence, which basically means... endless possibilities for expanding the game-world inside and outside of the City (near-infinite dimensions, planes and realities to visit and a city that changes itself on a daily basis).
Perfect choice for an MMO in my opinion.

Rifts would be pretty cool. I'd also like to really see a Battletech MMO, those mech battles would be cool. I've seen a bunch of good ideas on this list though!
My personal idea would be Warmachine. Each player could start as an infantry type unit and work up to becoming a Warcaster, who could control the Warjacks. And with Privateer Presses way of doing tourney seasons the devs could carry that into the games to make an ever changing world. It would be awesome!

Imagine pluggin in your MOO2 to a balanced long scaling version of itself, with the same UI and controls, except there was no Orion, and no limits to the universe, and that every single player starts 18 stars away from a new player starting point.
Far enough so that they cant reach new players before they can defend themselves.
