So when you buy EQ II Is it mandatory to use Steam to launch client? Can you download game from SOE and use your account outside Steam?

I'd like to know this too please.

ie: I already have the main client, and I'm not interested in having to download it again.
If I purchased the current deal from Steam (as a cheap way to gain some adv packs and TSO expansion) am I able to tie it to my existing account so I only need log in as usual through the EQ2 launcher?

Or would I be forced into downloading it all again (thru Steam urgh)?
Or would I have to register an entirely new account with the Steam client and not be able to tie it to my existing SOE account?

Nowhere on Steam does it mention anything about existing account holders..

I (heart) Steam 4ever.

You just can't beat the deals they have every week. I've also been scared about the inability to play single-player games without an internet connection. However, you shouldn't have any problems if the game is updated and you save your Steam logon/password on your computer. You can always test it by unplugging your ethernet cable.

Great deals on Steam, yet I'm a little confused. Why are they selling the EQ2: Rise of Kunark expansion when their latest expansion, The Shadow Odessy has all the expansions before it? Seems a bit silly to me.

While I love Steam... should add GoGamer has GW at slightly lesser cost for the boxed version of the trilogy -- $32.90.

I started MMO's when WoW came out. I was debating on goings with EQ2 or WoW, since EQ 2. I didn't really know anything about either one except what I read on the box. I had one friend who leaned me towards WoW because he was a huge Warcraft fan. I'm glad I took WoW from the get go because I read really bad reviews on EQ2 when it first started. After playing WoW for 4 years, becoming burned out, playing guildwars, AoC, WAR, all the BIG MMO's, I couldn't resist EQ2 for $10. Even if it was only EQ2 with no expansions $10 would be worth a free month.

I've played the game all day, hit level 10 and I got to say I like it. Worth $10 no doubt. I may even keep a subscription for this. Who knows? I didn't read a lot before purchase and I love the feeling of being in a new world. I don't even know the level cap. I'm a shadowknight and it seems like a crappy death knight, but I'm still having fun....

@ the people bashing steam. I've had steam since launch. It came out and let hl2 prepurchasers get cs:source. I've never had any problems with steam. You need to set steam up to allow you to play games if you dont have an internet connection. Not a big deal. Since then I've bought a ton of steam games. Never any problems. I almost always buy a couple games per month with the 75% off deal. I have an entire library of games I paid almost nothing for.

@ Preston:
Are you able to let us know a couple of things please?
- When you created an account for EQ2, was it through Steam or through the Sony Station account page?
- How does Steam give you an account? Do they supply you with a code or something, or was there a choice to add the purchase to an existing SOE account name?
- When you log into the game, do you have to have Steam running, or are you just logging in through the SOE EQ2 Launcher?

Would really appreciate it. Thanks ~A~

@Amana i cant reply to so ill list them here

When you created an account for EQ2, was it through Steam or through the Sony Station account page?
It was through the Sony Account Page

- How does Steam give you an account? Do they supply you with a code or something, or was there a choice to add the purchase to an existing SOE account name?
There was a code just like the one you would recieve in the game box. You just copy and paste it in to the "Game Subscriptions" of your accout and its activated with 30 days free play time

- When you log into the game, do you have to have Steam running, or are you just logging in through the SOE EQ2 Launcher?
This is originally where i had problems. It says travel staright through Steam but it won't work so what you need to do is go to http://launcher.station.sony.com/ and download the Launcher manually. This will then able you to play through SoE.

Any other questions and ill try to answer them as best as i can =D

Quick update. Using the station Laucnher will require you to use a Credit or Debit card to setup a subscription plan but it will NOT charge you until the free 30 days are up. You can easily cancel the subscription before then and not be charged.

Thanks for the reply Sparros.
Yes, I went ahead and made the purchase thru Steam.
I'm already a long-time account holder for EQ2, so all I wanted were the keys to add to my existing SOE account, to activate RoK and TSO.

Turns out, for those that already have accounts, that you have to let Steam **begin installing these two titles in your Steam client, then immediately pause the download**.

At this point, you'll be able to right click on the them in the 'My Games' list in Steam, and there will be an option to 'Manage Game Account'.

When you click on this, it opens a Station webpage that's pre-populated with your new expansion key, with a 'log in' button.
All you do is log in with your existing SOE credentials and it automatically activates the key against your existing SOE account.

Repeat for both expansions.

Then, simply go back to Steam, right click on each expansion entry and choose 'Delete Local Content' so they don't download anything more and get cleaned out of your Steam Apps Cache.

It's long-winded and poorly thought out. For us existing account holders, it would've been so much easier simply to have Steam email us the keys. Additionally, there's no documentation about this on the Steam site nor on the EQ2 site - I had to trawl through the EQ2 forums to find the 'begin installing on Steam to get key options' solution.

Whoever's in charge of these processes is a) braindead and b) sackable. Poor poor poor..
