I still think its early to cry vaporware. People cried vaporware for 10 years when it came to Darkfall, and even though it isn't what everyone wanted it to be, it did happen. They very well could be holding it all back until Aion US is stable.

http://www.gamervision.com/gamer/coop/blog/article/interview_guild_wars A resent interview (a couple of months ago) it is obvious (at the near end of the interview) they are working on GW2 and ... that it is not a vaporware :D!!!

Do people remember that the design of the city of "Factions" was heavley influenced by Ghost in the Shell??

If you also look at the concept art of factions you can see "space ship" like concepts with a asian-theme.

Who said fantasy and sci-fi couldn't be mixed together? I mean i wouldn't be surprised if there was a high-tech race that lives in skyscrappers in some far out land.

You all also got to remeber that the setting is based 250 years from the original GW and that the lands have acturally shifted. Wouldn't be surprised if some races lost their magical touch and started relying on techonology.
We also didn't have Computers 250 years back, and look at it now! We possible can't live without computers!

The thing is, they HAD to announce Guild Wars 2, since the only major updates that Guild Wars gets is though its campaigns (Or expansions, in the case of EoTN) and they were stopping those for development on Guild Wars 2. In the case of SWTOR, they didn't have to announce it until it was about a year away from being finished, since they didn't have to explain anything.

You're about one of the only people around here that seems to actually understand what goes into game development and marketing.

It might be worth adding that the picture above is labeled as originating from "Guild Wars". Directly taken from Into the Pixel:

Title: Construction Site
Artist Name: Daniel Dociu
Game: Guild Wars
Software: Photoshop

There's another picture, this time from Kekai Kotaki, which is clearly labeled "Guild Wars 2". Again, from Into the Pixel:

Title: Snow Battle
Artist Name: Kekai Kotaki
Game: Guild Wars 2
Software: Photoshop CS2

So it's possible that the picture above is indeed from the original game (might be concept art from Factions, Eye of the North, or even unused concept art for the campaign they were developing before they reduced EotN to an expansion).

As for the vaporware argument, I'm with Cithrax and Dethgar. They had to announce GW2, at a time where they couldn't have had more than 1 year developement time (it's more likely they had like 6 months, and only concept art in their hands), simply because otherwise everyone would have expected them to add new campaigns. If they hadn't announced GW2, people probably would have started rumours that they were running out of money because GW1 wasn't profitable or something similar.

Bioware, on the other hand, had the benefit of not being forced to announce anything. When they finally announced something, they already had years and years of developement in their pockets. The first news for an unnamed MMO stem from March 2006 (http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=8485), although the alliance with LucasArts wasn't admitted until one and a half year later in October 2007 (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6181948.html). It took them another year to finally announce the game itself (http://www.starwars.com/games/videogames/torannounce.html). So right now SW:TOR is in (the early months of) its 4th documented year of developement. You can probably add a year of developement (at least concept art and concept writings) on top of that.

I have to admit though that ArenaNet might have been a bit to enthusiastic with their original beta expectations. But you never know how much of this is due to restrictions they 'suffer' because of NCSoft. Who'd even consider buying (and paying monthly) for Aion, if there was a regular Guild Wars 2 beta, or something like the E3 for Everyone-event that Guild Wars 1 got.

Yes, I'm agreeing with the last few comments. Guild Wars 2 needed to be announced to explain Eye of the North, and to give a reason for not making more expansions. It's unfortunate that they had to announce so early as it gets everyone so excited by all the hypothetical things the game may include. It would have been better to announce about a year before release, when they have something worth announcing. I'm also hoping that they announce something or at least give us a screenshot once Aion has settled, but then again, I'd rather them take a few more years to make it great than spit out some bobbins, rushed game just to please the fans. I think the fact that we are pretty much seeing nothing from Anet shows that Guild Wars 2 is definitely in progress. I look forward to the next bit of information, but I'm not expecting anything this year.
