"a few bad apples"

Aurora could probably have survived a few bad apples. The real problem was that the guy in charge was using the team to get loot for his corporation and to fight it's PvP wars.

His corporation was known to encourage CCP staffs and GMs to join and for members to seek positions as volunteers. I suspect the event team had lot of members from that corp/alliance. When people discovered who the team leader was, CCP got cold feet and let the whole team go (speculation on my part). They did not want the attention of another "t20 scandal".

So CCP error was not to shut Aurora down, it was putting themselves in a position where they where forced to shut it down.

I cannot speak for previous supervisors of Aurora, but ISD Galen, who was in charge at the time Aurora was disbanded has an impeccable record, and is still in charge of Aurora's less noticeable successor program, Mercury.

CCP really has no place to complain, nor does the player base that lets it continue. They have a system that is flawed. Mechanics that allow real life meddling (to put it kindly) to manipulate the game both internally and externally.

Until these are closed, "things" will continue to happen. As long as EVE has no consequence (it never has) and devs and players run rampant with no punishment for the many many serious offenses that have happened, the lore, stories and background that you speak of so highly will remain full of this cancer, slowly killing the game.

One big thing folks need to keep in mind, this game is made for CCP's enjoyment, they have stated this many times. Interviews, accusations, all posted have statements full of beauties like this: "I lean towards pvp, and i will do anything and everything in my power to influence how it is played" just love that one from 3 years ago. The point is that many many of these articles by devs speak this way, so who makes the stories and who supports who.
