I usually choose my name based on what class/race I'm playing.

For instance, my shaman is named Shockzer, my NE hunter is named Blueneck, my mage is named Magicmarker, and my UD rogue is named Slavezero

Before Guild Wars, I was young and impressionable, and went around the net and online games as KingLeoricIII (King Leoric the Third), but for Guild Wars, I wanted to start fresh and make something I could call my own. So, I thought and thought, until I remembered a Japanese restaurant I went to a long while ago, called Saji sYa, I think, and I thought I'd just borrow the name, but I didn't want to be known as just 'Saji', so I decided to be my egotistical self and call myself 'Master Saji'

So, when making names for Guild Wars, I decided to have some form of Master (ex. Lord, Adept, etc) as the first part, some form of describing the class I was playing (ex. Necromancer was Grim, Warrior was Slayer, etc) is the second part, and finishing of the full name was Saji. And this is most of the time.

Other times I'll skip the first part and just have one word to describe my class followed by Saji, which always works.

And then there's another alt I use, just incase, which is from Resevoir Dogs, and I'll go by 'Mister Pink' or some form of the name. So yeah...:D

The names of my City of Heroes toons tend to be plays on my char's archetype and powers (such as "Thrives in Darkness", my Spines/Dark Stalker).
As for my first WoW character, I discovered to much disappointment that the name did not accept whitespace. Thus was the poor undead warlock named "Mekooy" (a thinly disguised "Mes couilles !" -a french equivalent for "f*ck that !"- which were my exact words at that moment).

In WAR I usually pick names based off greek gods but adding one letter somewhere in the mix like Hesphaestus is Hephaestus with an s after the firs e, another example is Atres which is Ares with a t after the a. I find this makes for some very interesting names.

I try to match as closely to the in-game character names as possible. This can be difficult for starting characters, so I always make a test character if I don't know the flavor of the game first.

I picked my few* names as a callsign, a name of an avatar of myself in the game, in a sense, an MMO allows you to Roleplay yourself- in the game, so to speak. So obviously I wouldnt be a human guy in Aions world, but I might be Kaamos.

Still I pick those names specifically on things I find poetic, something with meaning, perhaps a name I would use in many roles, or a character I would prefer to play the role of, I picked Kaamos as it was my favorite song from Apoc- back in the day, though, I also picked it because in Finland, Kaamos is the winter solstice, and they get almost no light for 3 months, which to me- sounds intimidating, especially when you play a character, who is all white in always black backgrounds! (Anarchy Online- Atrox Keeper in Chosen gear, with a little white angel on my shoulder.)

Generally I have just a few names I've used over the years that I use again. So the "order" of characters I make is usually.

1st: Cyrant
2nd: Nadril
3rd: Gatoraide

And after that it's just whatever.

If I'm on a regular server, I usually pick a name that I think will fit my character and is recognizable to my friends. My irl nickname is "Burnsy" so my WoW mage was named "Frostburnsy".

In WAR, I grabbed my trusty encyclopedia of northern & eastern European mythologies and pick a fitting name.

I'm a hunter named Wuldor. Wuldor is an Old English cognate of the Norse God of the hunt, Ullr. This actually makes the Sif and Thorim fight rather awkward as they are technically my mom and step-dad.

Oh well.

My FFXI galka monk was called "Ahmik" because it sounded cool and I saw it somewhere (srsly.)

My EQ2 iksar guardian is called Rhoslyn because it sounds lizardy enough. But I think my EQ2 human necromancer, Imtithal, has the most meaning because it is an Arabic name meaning "polite obedience." Being a necromancer and summoning the dead, you know, obeying, etc. etc. Kind of intentional. The name does meaning not apply to the player behind the character, according to my guild. =P

I'm pretty terrible at coming up with character names, and the GMs usually make me change it. My TBC main (a warlock) was originally called 'Phuk' and, for obvious reasons, they made me change it, and I was daft enough to settle on 'Phun'.

My current main is called Latef.

It was originally 'Lateforwork'.

For my, old, WoW character I just stole names from books and now I got no logic to it at all. I've had Dance With [name] names in GW but those suck so now I usually just stick to something descriptive or something with Monky. I'm really horrible at names though, one of the things I spend most time on actually...

Hey, brendon,

Thanks for pointing that out! ;)

Having only taken Spanish 101 and not being afraid of public embarrassment, I show off my complete lack of skills all the time. But in this particular case, I do know that mano is a feminine noun, and chose the o ending because it's a male character, in fact a Gnome, and I didn't want him to feel like I was challenging his -- already diminished -- manliness.

Forgive me, all Spanish-speakers, for taking liberties with your language, but I call artistic license! And like I said, it's good enough for gov't work.

Well, Im a old-school roleplayer (the pen and paper form) and started to come up with various names for everything when I was young(er). Some of the characters names (and NPCs that I've created in numerous stories when Ive been the GM). Usually I use one of thouse names. But sometimes thats not enough (oddly enough they can be occupied) and then I start to free-form names that has some connection to characters I remember.

On the other hand. Many of my characters where based on either mythological things or objects. But equally many times, the names where just gibberish. Names that sounded cool, funny or suiting :)
