i was a subscriber up untill last year.
MXO was fantastic, i have a lot of friends in there and SOE could have made this game free to play at least, to shut down a game that has a big movie attached to it i feel is wrong.
my char is a machine char named Chmarr Darksoul and i am at the maximum possible level across the entire abilitys tree's
i dont want this game to go into the grave it should be kept alive

Wow. That's damn impressive. Will you marry me?

How could SOE even consider shutting the server when Chmarr Darksoul, who hasn't played or payed in over a year, is sitting on it? What ARE they thinking?

Back in reality, would a cookie make you feel better? Red or blue?

It's a shame an alternate investor couldn't have been found. Instead SOE have washed their hands because they can't be arsed, their new MMO's are getting all the attention.

Bunch of losers, I'll never play an SOE game again.

There hasn't been an MMO in the last 5 years that I wanted more badly to survive and thrive. How on gods' green earth you can screw up a Matrix MMO, I have no idea ... except, of course, by underfunding it and pulling the plug before it gets finished.

It's never fun to see a game go. While I never played Matrix Online, I can't but feel deeply saddened by it's closing. I did a trial once a few months ago, but I failed to get into it. Here is hoping for some light at the end of the tunnel, Good luck Matrix Online Players!

Only MMo I have ever been in that had a Mexican stand off. Players believed their actions had consequences and played accordingly.

I loved MxO, and still do. The loadout idea in itself f'in rocked - you could play as an aikido master one day, a gunman/karate the next, an artillery the next, and then swap out to be a coder when you wanted to craft. It was spectacular. And the live events - jesus. I was a part of a number of them, did a lot during the Blue Sky piece. DAMN it was sweet to see an in-game character. I would occasionally log in just to read the story updates, and do the critical missions. Hell, I loved it enough at one time to write up a whole series of articles that got posted in the MxO newsletter, which was a first for me.

MxO will be missed. And it does show that you *can* have interaction, and do it well.

One feature I used to love was the integration of chat (AOL maybe?) in to the game - I'd get IMs from my hovercraft commander at work, updating me of stuff to happening that night. Awesome.

This is a sad day, indeed. :/ But if there's one thing true of the MMO industry, it's that it's not dead until it's DEAD, and I somehow don't think this is going to be MXO's swan-song.

Also, I lol'd at the article title. That is all.

I used to play MxO for a while a couple of years ago. While it had a lot of good moments, its biggest strength was also its biggest weakness: the events. The events were fantastic, but unless you had a schedule that allowed you to interact with the real-time events the game just wasn't worth playing. And while the Interlock combat system was truly innovative, after a while all of the stock animations got old. I got tired of seeing the exact same sequence of punches and kicks that indicated an unsuccessful hand-to-hand attack and didn't necessarily want to branch out into the martial arts tree just to make things look different.

The game did a lot of things right, but the difficulty I had in experiencing live events made it really hard to enjoy the game. I actually think it's better that they're shutting the game down rather than letting it sit on the servers as a free-to-play. Without a dedicated team of folks willing and able to take time out of their lives to run those big live events for free and basically work unpaid on expanding the storyline, it just really wouldn't be worth it.

You hit the nail on the head, it IS depressing. Other games have come and gone, and I gave a frown that they were shutting down, and would miss some feature. But I am seriously going to miss MxO. While I no longer play like I did, I still have an active subscription through my station pass. I logged in today and just started jumping around.. I forgot how cool even that was.

I then loaded up my Kung Fu and did some missions, I spammed that screenshot key the entire time. I guess I always took for granted MxO would always be there. But the sad truth is coming so I'll log on and just enjoy the simple things that make this game so memorable.

oh oh it burns its burns :P

ehehehe

anyways SOE ruined the game when they took it from WB.
first thing they did was take out the spy tree and the stealth jacket and then put those into SWG all the crap from SWG was put into MXO and all the good stuff from MXO was put into SWG

sony has the problem of killing games because they want to make money from the bigger name movies such as starwars.
and from what i've been reading all over the net it seems SWG was so over hyped when ppl went to it they were all disappointed.
mxo is the little game that could, solid story line ((untill sony killed off all the major chars)) a fantastic live event team ((again sony killed it)) the entire game was a hit from the start then WB sold it.

instead of shutting it down they could have made it free to play that way the game is still alive, and allow players to add there own content that way the players would have a say in how it runs.

it is trully sad that a big company that lost billions in making the ps3 (LMAO@the ps3) and lost millions in buying other companys only to see em collapse and also lose a multitude of court cases which resulted in losses of the hundred millions.

sony should give up and actually listen to there subscribers

Seeing an online world snap out of existence is always sad, but the feeling is particularly poignant when SOE shuts down an MMO (Isn't this the second one, now?). An era has passed. Sony used to be the last major holdout that would keep a struggling, low population game alive seemingly forever, presumably subsidized by the Station Pass.

While never having more than a passing interest for any of the SOE properties, I always respected that apparent dedication to their online communities. Unfortunately, in any economy but especially this one, shareholders are interested in gaining profit, not goodwill.

Maybe another company will pick it up, but I think free-to-play might be pretty difficult with all the inevitable licensing restrictions involved with a major movie IP like this.

*Sigh*, yes, it is sad with MxO going offline. It was my first MMO, and I starting during open beta.
Some of the early events were pretty cool, for us in Europe unfortunately at like 1:30 in the morning or so sometimes.
Heck, when I tried playing CoH the first time I wondered who ripped off who in terms of the quest system (not knowing much about MMOs at the time).
It was mainly the grind that made me never get a max level character.
*Sighs again*

*Tips hat*

Sad sad day indeed. Auto Assault was sad, but like you said, MxO was something different of itself.

And Lady Return ? I remeber that name. :)

Sad to see it go, not surprising at all tho. The game had great potential and it still pisses me off to this day that it never was met.

Shout out to all former Insegnanti guys/girls on both Proxy (pre-mergers) and Syntax
