MMO? Can we really call APB which is an overextended GTA mod an MMO?

I refer back to my earlier frustration, what was once a dedicated genre pandering to a captive, ever growing audience is now striving to be a juggernaut just like any other media type you can pick out of a hat.

I think that APB could be really neat. We haven't had a GTA style MMO before. If they have all the RPG elements in there it might be great. I can imagine player housing where we have crack den apartments with loot we steal from smashed store fronts and burgled houses. They can have the bus depot as a choke point to get people together to travel about and a parking log flea market as the Auction house. I would love it!

You're right, we need games with homogeneous gameplay but slightly different art assets. Oh and it has to be in a fantasy setting, nothing else will fit in with the spirit of MMO design.

Why so negative?

MMOs are the new FPS... a new medium of game that will be explored and exploited for years to come...

Truly, there are 100+ useless, pointless, not even fun FPS games...
And there will be the same number of MMOs...

But within that giant pile of development, some of those human hours of work actually produce gems... sure... it sucks having to do work to distinguish the good from the bad... but, MMOs are very heavily tracked and subscription numbers can usually be found... these help you not have to spend money on games you won't play...

Unlike other games where pretty much the only option is buy for $50 after reading a glowingly positive review on gamespot, and then hate the game and play it for less than an hour, and realize all the better things you could have done with that $50. Or you could just pirate it. And people wonder why that happens. pfft.

Anyway, Achilles, you do realize that you're posting on "massively", right? The site pretty much focuses on MMOs... Of course games of all genres are going to try to break into the MMO market... and, it will happen successfully...

Isn't EVE just an overextended Homeworld mod? Yet here it sits being one of the most successful MMOs...

MMOs aren't limited to characters like the fruity elf in colorful robes with a sword speaking in elvish phrases and making reference to localized game lore deities. That's old and done. It is definitely time for some modern, post apocalyptic, more sci-fi, and other types of MMOs to step up to the plate.

You can complain when pac-man or frogger get their own MMO, until then, be happy that people are at least TRYING something other than World of Borecraft.

Lmao Achilles you damn idiot. Seriously get a grip. Who died and gave you the right to judge stuff you dont know about? APB is a mod? How? Its been in the making for more than 5 years. By the original GTA creator. How is it a mod? What you play? World of warcraft or Conan probably. You're laughable.

the problem is over saturation of the MMO market. they are running out of fresh ideas, thats why we have 100's of wowish mmos p2p or f2p.
even if the mechanics for this game are somewhat generic (which i cant speak to personally) its still a fresh take in the mmoverse.

anything that is new will be scrutinized, anything that isnt new will be poked at as a copy, so in an industry whos customers are, imo, the worst possible customer demographic you can possibly have, there will be no way to win.

mmo gamers are fickle, picky, cheap assholes with loud voices and short attention spans. myself included.

again i welcome some of the "fresh, new" games coming out in the next year. we are seeing a resurgence of the sci-fi MMO as well as games like this, fallen earth, global agenda all of who break the standard mold and have a chance to bring us some variety in our gameplay aside from the dragon, elf, ork, dwarf D&D copies that have been the staple point of this industry for a long time now.

the problem though is going to get worse. too many MMOs, not enough gamers.

Judge - I'll respond you your crafted comment and ignore the linear, ignorant rant of Jay (For the record I have been playing FFXI since the day it dropped in the EU).

My negativity stems from a long history of playing eastern MMO's that are fixed in the genre. While I appreciate your optimism in the growth of the industry and to some extent I welcome it I do not think that classifying these new age FPSRPG's in this already well established, specific genre does anything to promote either side. Do you want the half million under 15’s that scream through microphones on Halo3 coming to your MMO? Do you want the quick fix mentality and instant gratification of the FPS genre polluting your grinding, looting and mission arcs? Mark my words, the merging of two genre so poles apart will be the downfall of the smaller, and is this case, that is the MMORPG.

They are different games and just to reiterate I welcome the expansion. This being said, I cannot condone the merging of the genres as I have always been and always will be an MMORPG fan, not an MMOFPS or any other MMO-etc that comes about.

I would take time to remind all that we post on the internet to share opinion in the hope that we broaden our horizons. We don’t post just to slate or just to boast. Those that do... Well, we all remember what it was like to be 16.

On that note - I welcome your comments.

Achilles you're clueless and sad. Please be quiet. Microphones is a step forward to communication. As I said, what games you play? Oh and MMOFPS. 1 word. Planetside.

Jay - Slightly amiss to why I am even taking time to reply to your comments, but nevertheless.

I don’t know why you are concentrating on the microphones. Do you see anywhere in my previous comments where I stress a bias for either having mics or not having them? No is the answer to that question. Re-read the comment and take from it the objective opinion on MMO's and their progression.

A piece of advice, you clearly have a few years ahead of you, it might be an idea to take that time and apply it to education or study so you can fully understand the nuances of the English language rather than posting ignorant (if I may be so blunt) and misguided comments on an internet site.

This is the very last time I will respond to anything you say unless it merits a measured response - I am not here to argue, merely to converse.

I did not expect nothing more than a wall of text that reads the same bullshit as you posted before a few hours. Then again what to expect from some elitist jerk? I wonder what company pays you to talk crap to APB, but fear not, you are wrong and we all here know it. APB is fresh. You can stick to your laughable eastern MMO carebear grinding. Get off the comments if you do not like the game. Also. 5 years in development is not, by far, an extended mod to anything. I'll stop typing now, you have to go farm bosses for armors. Laters, son.

Its elitist crap like that the limits the games we can play. I staunchly dislike WOW and I cant even begin to comprehend you knocking APB when you play FF11 (A series that is like the same game over and over and over. Yes Ive played a few of them and I also like JRPGs that are different like Chrono Trigger or the fire emblem series). I will tell you that the Halo 3 15 yearold gametards you speak off will not play an MMO like APB even if it appeals to them at first because the reason they play halo 3 all the time is the same reason they wont last in an MMO, patience. As fun as a round might be they dont have time for character development.

The reason APB stands out against the similar CrimeCraft is that while they both have GTA-esque landscapes and themes, APB is saying that their mission system will/can pit players against players as Criminals engaged in a crime will cause an APB to go out and the law can respond giving great pick up PVP.
