As has been said, it sounds like another ultra-niche game -- sort of like Darkfall, Lineage II, or EVE in fantasy dress.

Ultra-niche games tend to attract very devoted followers (cf. EVE), so Mortal could do well. It's nothing I'm interested in, though. PvP play bores the piss out of me very quickly. The revolving, never-ending game of "death tag". I'll pass.

I love how the WoW kool-aid brigade is dismissing this as a niche title. Well no shit geniuses; spend any time reading what the MO devs have written and its pretty clear that these guys are interested in making a world first and another exercise in carrot-chasing second, if at all.

Of course it isn't going to be for the majority of mmo gamers, its for the people who care more about immersion than theory-crafting, its for people who want crafting to matter instead of being reduced to an unnecessary sideshow of alts and bind-on-equip bullshit, and hopefully, its for the roleplayers who came to this genre for its virtual world aspects and were drowned in a sea of number-crunching stat whores who want to unwind in front of pop culture crapola that isn't quite reality television but is equally nauseating.

For the majority, keep grinding on your meaningless level treadmills and leave MO alone. It absolutely isn't for you.

I just deleted about five paragraphs of commentary, lol. After that kindness, I'll just say that I read the linked article and believe Star Vault has bitten off far more than they can chew.

It's nice to see more games being designed from the philosophy that UO pioneered. Hopefully one of these companies will step up and a worthy successor. Darkfall, unfortunately, is not that game.

I'd be playing Darkfall but for 2 reasons:

1) It's nigh on impossible to buy.
2) The community seems to consist of a sack full of rabid and barely literate ferrets.

If Mortal Online can fix those two problems they've got my money. I've long since gotten sick of the current gen of theme park MMOs.

Oh, and to add, I consider not having a built in map a HUGE feature. I want to enjoy exploring a place again and learning where stuff is on my own rather than be lead through it by yellow exclamation marks.

I think I could really enjoy a game like this, but it would depend entirely on the community. Unfortunately, the communties that I've seen grow up around open pvp, tend to be awful. If there is a trial I will definitely be willing to try it out, but I would never plunk down hard earned cash on a game that may be rendered completely unenjoyable by gankers and griefers.

In response to PlasticRat's comments about Darkfall - I'm completely baffled by Aventurine's strategy of making the game almost impossible to purchase. I mean, I can understand if they don't want to overload the servers, but making your game difficult to actually purchase, that just screams of failure.

If community is your main criterium, best steer clear from this title Chadly, as their forum is effectively ruled by fanboi CMs and the communication between them and the developers is strained (that's putting it mildly!). Oh well, those forums rarely topping more than 100 members logged in basically says it all: MO is an accident waiting to happen :D

It's really hard to compare sandbox mmo's (UO,Darkfall,MO,EVE..) and themepark mmo's(WoW,Lotro,War,..)

They simply attract a different crowd, I myself am more of a sandbox mmo player, i have played quite a few of the themepark mmo's, it's fun for a little while and sometimes pve is a bit challenging, but I didn't get a kick out of pvp in them. I didn't feel anything when I won against a good player, nor did I feel anything when I lost. It all didn't matter, there was no real incentive to even initiate a fight with someone, I wouldn't gain anything of importance and for the person I killed, it would be an extremely minor inconvenience. And in some of these mmo's the pvp was just plain boring.

What most of them did right, was pve. As mentioned before, the carrot-on-a-stick principle, but it quickly becomes repetitive and feels more like a job then a game.

I believe this is how most of the people feel, that are drawn to games like darkfall/mortal online. We tried the themepark mmo's, but got bored fast.

We should simply stop commenting on each other's genre of mmo, because we look at them with a different mentality.

Mortal online promises a lot, darkfall did too and although the game has it flaws and feels a bit unfinished, I have enjoyed myself a lot more then i have in the past years with other mmo's. It's not as good a feeling as I had with Ultima Online, but good enough.

Mortal Online promises a lot. They have basically taken 85% of what Darkfall promised and promised they would do it right. The only main difference is that MO has a much more intelligent fps type of pvp with multiple character hitboxes.

There's no sense arguing whether this genre is good or bad because your opinion is going to be dictated by what you've experienced or become accustomed to. For those of us who have played UO, AO, DAoC, DF and other older, harder mmos like Everquest, we will really tend to appreciate a game where everything is not handed to you and extremely simplified to the point where an unborn fetus could understand it. A game with a big dangerous world with no map or instructions/directions is just what a lot of people have been asking for.

Everything about this game sounds amazing. I could go for 3rd person pov, but that's ok.

Action combat! (not click and wait).

Real mounts! (not my-little-ponies you put in your pocket)

Real loot! (I want what you got, I take it. Likewise, I actually fear death to an extent. Also, no uber over-powered characters..cuz they lose their stuff too!)

I don't know how anyone could complain about these things. This sounds like the MMO I've been dreaming of! How I miss you UO.
