http://www.gamerzines.com/mmozine/

I just wish'd they had more personality cause all the mmorpgs out right now are pretty shit and yet they are so generic about it. It's like how many WoW clones do we need? Runes of Magic went one step further and just copied WoW completly.

Well the perfect MMO model doesn't exist I'm afraid, it's short-sighted to say WoW's way of doing things automatically means success (how many have we seen in recent years that died before/around their one-year anniversary?).

I'd love see more character customization, not less; WoW is freakin' terrible in that angle for example. A lot could be said about the complete lack of character evolution in most MMOs that goes beyond reaching the cap level.

One thing I like a lot about Warhammer is the differentiation between rank (level) and renown rank. The double system isn't flawless, but it's interesting to see some different ideas being implemented.

SWG came out in 2003 and had all the right ideas and got the mmorpg format done perfectly. The problem is it has half finished and really buggy and people just see that because SOE and LA suck and they don't think that it coulda been done right by someone else. Everything about SWG appealed to everyone and it fixed every problem mmorpgs have like the top heavy level system that makes the world empty. It made you do quests because they were fun and not to grind boring quests like WoW.

However SOE and LA couldn't fix problems like Comp Armour and doc Buffs and they added new problems like Jedi and then they done the CU and NGE.

Like Planetside aswel was amazing and it could have been amazing if SOE done it properly but instead they never upgraded the engine and they did the expansion CC 3 months after launch with no testing and then they did BFR's and everyone quit and it died.

Like fucking why are companies so fucking stupid.

Someone hire me I can design the perfect mmorpg.

The guy mentioned questing, because yeah questing is the most cloned element in every MMO ever since the antichrist came, WoW, it's what players will occupy most time with, it's the most addictive part since it lets you SEE your character grow stronger and bigger, it's hallucinatory, even.

So

Recycling the questing bit can be fine, but ever since WoW we've seen this part not only cloned and re-cloned, but also dumbed further and further down, that's naturally negative, it's not just recycling.

That's what the article clearly missed, not the generic superficial concept of recycling, but to FORCE everything in being more and more accessible for the most brain-dead player, hoping that this way they would gather a bigger mass of players... in a way game producers often treat us as sheep, and take our stupidity for granted, since they manipulate us as mass with massified tastes.

Instead if producers were interested in giving some kind of challenge to players inside questing and levelling, recycling would be acceptable.

This is silly. What does it mean for an MMO to be "perfect"? Definitionally it would mean that it would perfectly conform to what makes an MMO an MMO. Aside from us not even being clear about that (an MMO doesn't have a clear definition), I think what they're going for is, "What would the best MMO look like?" Best is entirely a matter of preference in this case though, so all this blog is doing is saying, "This is how I would describe my ideal MMO." That's useless to the rest of us unless we agree with every aspect of their opinion of an ideal MMO, which it's likely we don't.

So in essence, this is just someone requesting that developers make their ideal game. Go them.

I think it's funny that the post cites Blizzard as the a company that can "tune out the background noise". Try Aventurine or even the WAR team if you want a bunch of people dedicated to their vision. Blizzard is probably the MMO developer most responsive to the desires of its fans. This has both good and bad results, but they're certainly not dead-set on making the game their way all the time.
