Please correct the title to:

BioWare's founders emphasize the importance of storytelling in their games... a-friggin-gain.

All jokes aside: Player actions changing the corse of the game could be really cool. If they implment something along the lines of the PVE choices in game, making.... say... the Sith Empire stronger and more evident in their influance would be awesome. If it's just "all the forumites want "X" in the Xpac" it's no different then any other mmo out.

Be nice to see more depth in MMOs than the "one upon a time there was some "phat lewtz" you may get from grinding the same boss over.. and over .. and over.

Lots of folks have said things like this in the past.

Then you get in-game and the fourth quest is collecting wolf-pelts for a pair of pants.

Believe it when I see it.

The part about: "Manipulation of world server data based on a broad range of user activities can actually change the game world." probably means if a certain number of people do X quest then it could infact change how that area is played in and view in the future.

For instance if 100,000 players on the Sith side break into a Republic Prison and choose to detonate the power generators destroying the base instead of just letting all the prisoners go, it would eventually change the prison in the persistent gameworld into a pile of smouldering rubble. There would then be the opportunity to take additional quests to take out advanced republic engineers heading to the prison to rebuild it. You can either take out the engineers or forcefully persuade them to rebuild it for the Sith and the story goes from there ultimately with the republic taking back over and starting again. Sort of like a really long term public quest.

Conceptually, that’s genius. And honestly, if things are THAT in-depth in-game all my negative-Nancy stuff will be out the window, and I’d be playing it.

Now, realistically, this premise has been promised before and fallen flat on its face. So, like the other poster stated: I’ll believe it when I see it.

One nagging thing that people seem to always forget about this game is, while Bioware and SW are super strong in their development and lore, respectively, this game and its development still ultimately answers to EA and Lucasarts. Two notoriously pushy and greedy corporations w/ little regard for the product they’re selling.

I’m just apprehensive about the level of hype around it already.

Yep definitely. Seeing is believing is a good thing to stand by with this game. There are a few interesting ideas in this game so far but we just dont know how they will play out.

Story is made out to be this massive part of the game but it could fall flat on its face if not done right. Walls of text and short quests have a habbit of turning the player against them. They just dont care about the story in those instances. Most gamers will just click through the quest to accept and look at their HUD update for the basic objectives. Hopefully they can give you an incentive to getting into the story, not just forcing you to read the bloody thing to know what you're supposed to do.

hey, the link to their article/talk isn't working! Is there a transcript up somewhere? I'd love to read it... more fodder for my interactive fiction and games studies. Was at LOGIN instead of GDCC - too much going on at once!
