While we've had reason to believe that Blizzard's next MMO would be a new IP, but this marks the first occasion that we've had some kind of official confirmation of our speculation.
In a post on the official World of Warcraft forums, Blizzard community manager Zarhym came out and said the new MMO was in fact an original IP, saying, "We have nothing to advertise for the new MMO because it's a shell of a game thus far. We've already stated it'll be a brand new franchise, which means the lore, art, and game play are being developed entirely from scratch. It's an overwhelming process, but a process through which we excel. Our track record supports this." While it's no press release or big event reveal, this is certainly the closest we've come to someone officially with Blizzard saying that, yes, it's not a previously created franchise.
So now that speculation on whether or not it's a new IP is over, we can begin to speculate on what genre this new IP will be! Science fiction, steampunk, cyberpunk or another fantasy setting? It's hard to say, although our hopes go for something decidedly not fantasy since Blizzard has already spent plenty of energy in those genres up to this point.

You guys are all wrong. It's a tamagotchi mmo. They just licensed the IP. You heard it here first.

Blizz might hang on for a bit with the game type and see how they new brand of MMOs are doing once they come out. With Earthrise being one of the FPS/MMO it will be interesting to see how Blizz responds.
Most people are expecting Sc-Fi, Space, FPS/MMO as the game since they have become very popular in development.
I do not think they will do Sc-Fi because they will have to compete with Bioware and Star Wars. Then you have EvE along with Jumpgate and Star Trek Online for space ships so the whole market right now is really over saturated. So steampunk or medieval is what I would be banking on.

To echo the earlier comments, I don't care what it is as long as it isn't fantasy.
Rather, as long as it isn't TYPICAL fantasy. I'd like to see a good (read: not F2P) fantasy game that utilizes different cultural influences other than the standard Tolkien-esque European ones. An Arabian Nights-themed MMORPG would be awesome, or something Asian that doesn't utilize the same tired anime style graphics.
A good space opera-type MMORPG in an original universe would be great... space battles and ground-based shoot outs... in other words, Star Wars: Galaxies only, you know, not sucky. Of course, The Old Republic will probably cover this in some ways, as will Star Trek.
We'll just have to wait and see.

I'm disappointed if it is anything other than World of Starcraft. I guess blizz can afford to throw the dice on a new IP for an MMO, otherwise I wouldn't have believed a company with such an easy setup as Starcraft MMO would do anything else. Oh well. At least it is one less MMO I need to worry about for now.

In last months Game Informer, Blizzard said they have been talking to the console makers. They are hoping to get the next-gen system better geared for mmo games. So it's always possible it could be work for the next Xbox and Playstation. Now as a genre guess their likely going to stray from fantasy so to pull in people not playing WoW. Maybe super heroes to jump on that bandwagon, or spys to compete with the Agency. If it doesn't fade into nothingness like Starcraft Ghost and Warcraft Adventures: Lord of the Clans, it will do very well and people will complain its not WoW.

I think it will be either a dark fantasy or Mythology MMO in the veins of Ramayan 3392.

Cough Cough, keep an eye on their job postings and see what they hire, thats the best way to see where they are upto in Development. And judging by who they were hiring in the beginning, and the transfers from the WoW dev team to the New announced MMO were very lacking meaning they were sourcing new talant to begin with.

Exactly.
Its a shame when people think that Blizz are original.
The real truth is, Claw me old matey, Blizz wanted the Warhammer license but baulked at the asking price. So instead they ripped it off and went to market with a clone. That's why there are so many similarities between warhammer and warcraft.

A steam punk game would be somewhat risqué, imo. Sure its "cool" but fads change. Why invest time/money in an MMO that could fall out of favor of popular trends?
I'm kind of personally getting tired of steampunk, and all the over-saturation its receiving now that its mainstream. Old. Done. Tired of seeing it.

Post - Apocalyptic or something on the lines of Fallout 3 is something I would love to see.
I don't get why everyone wants Sci-Fi. That genre is very boring nowadays, and there are many games that are Sci-Fi. Hell, scifi even has its own TV channel. StarCraft is a great genre, but really we need something original. Making a scifi mmo is just like making another fantasy mmo: Uncreative and Boring.
Let's get something new please. Something original, but an Apocalyptic type genre would be cool to say the least, even though there are games like Fallout 3 or Hellgate, Blizzard can still implement a new approach to Apocalyptic.

As far as post apocalyptic MMO’s go I know of 2 currently in development at the moment and scheduled to be released in 2009. Earthrise & Fallen Earth Both of which are sandbox in nature with open seamless worlds. So for the same reasons they may stay away from fantasy and Sci-fi I don’t think they’ll head in that direction.
Guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Ok let me lay down all the lines here first lets start on WoW they are not even finished with the current content and I dont see a wow sequal for many years to come if ever. 2nd Diablo serious you are all forgetting that Diablo 3 is going to be heavily focused on Multi player and restructing Battle Net thus making Diablo3 somewhat of WoW but Diablo structure/engine. And that leaves the only thing left known as Starcraft. Starcraft 2 is pretty much 100 percent complete they are already working on two expansions for starcraft 2 serious along with their Next Gen MMO which will be Starcraft online. Warcraft and diablo have gotten all the attention for the last 10-12 years. The next big MMO for blizzard is clear as day because it is going to be something that has never been done before. Starcraft has a huge universe thus making the task ahead very long and difficult but blizzard is pretty much clear that it will be a very successful game because it will be something that has never been laid out or even tried by other gaming companys. Starcraft is still huge around the world and when SC2 is released your all going to see that Blizzards MMO project is a starcraft based massive multi player SiFi hit end of freaken story.
