Eurogamer, although an excellent gaming site generaly, do employ some absolute prats for their reviews.

you know the big thing about this, regardless of the time that reviewer spent, is that there are a lot of things about the game in the review that are just not true. there was a comment made about multiple servers in the last paragraph of the review...there is only one server /failreview. i play Darkfall, i read the review and there are some good points about it, but its blatantly obvious that the reviewer did not take the time to actually learn some of the mechanics before bashing away at the game. this is like reading the first and last paragraphs of a book then writing a New York Times Book Review on it saying its terrible.

if you going to review an MMO, especially one as niche as Darkfall, you seriously need to give it some time before you nerdrage in an article AND you need to know what your getting into. Dont have someone that PVE raids 5 nights a week in WoW on a PVE server review a PVP based game like darkfall. Its like asking a cowboy to write a review on a snoop dog album.

One minor point to mention that's not included there is that Ed Zitron claims to have played for 9 hours and refutes their claims.

Whether he did or not, I don't know, but just for the sake of balance I think it's worth mentioning.

Its also worth pointing out that anyone thats ever read classic PC Zone knows Ed Zitron, hes not a nobody failure reviewer hes been about for years and is widely respected.

The whole if you like this you can't review this is utter utter tripe.

So someone that plays alot of first person shooters is not allowed to review a platformer because its not something they would normally play?

You'd think if the game was good enough the strength of the specific title would set it apart and it would be enjoyable no matter what genre or focus it has.

As someone pointed on on mmorpg.com had the reviewer given Darkfall a 10/10 after playing for 30 seconds Tasos would have been gushing over how great the review was.....

Also the whole ""and Darkfall’s reviews so far have been mostly good ones."" is COMPLETE BULLSHIT. Yes there are lots of fanbot reviews masturbating about FULL LOOT PVP OMG HAXXORS.

""Not even the harshest critics of the game or the trolls on various forums would give it that low a score."""

Actually they do......... CONSTANTLY.

However I have to feel for Tasos after having the pvp freaks lap DF up for two months having a major gaming site publish somthing totally inflammitory is rather a kick in the teeth.

Now the big questions are Is the lord of lies (Who said on April 13th 2007 "Darkfall is feature complete and ready to release") right about how long the reviewer actually played. (I for one do not trust Aventurine OR thier server logs one bit.)

And two will we EVER see a tiny bit of professionalism come out of Aventurine because a flame filled post is completely unprofessional. The reviewer may well have been also BUT two wrongs just compound the problem.

I read this review and I got to say it kinda reads like every other review of darkfall out there.

I haven't played the game yet so I can't comment on the accuracy of the review (although his wit was on top form, had a good few laughs), I can see that the reaction from the Darkfall developers and the community was ridiculously overdone.

I looked at Eurogamer for the first time today, to see what appeared to be rampaging nerds who were passionately protecting a video games as if they were trying to keep face of a family member. It was sad above all else.

Then I followed it up by reading the developers response, which they have every right to do. My impression was that it seemed a tad petty, not acting like a child having a strop petty, but petty enough that it seemed that they simply couldn't take criticism (although they did, unarguably, have some good points).

Anyway, just my two cents, the two cents of a non-mmo playing gamer :]

well...
any sensible darkfall player (meaning, non a rabid fanboy) will tell you several things about the first review.

-there were factual errors in the review. If it's gonna be posted on a major gaming site like EG, GET THE FACTS RIGHT - The reviewer didn't get basic things about the control system, the looting, the combat....let alone didn't seem to notice that you're meant to put items on the hotbar, to switch between them... like pretty much every MMO out there. He claimed that to switch weapons, you had to move them from your bags to your character... that's like casting spells from the spellbook in WoW.

-The review hit upon several things that ARE wrong with darkfall. it's not a perfect game, far from it.

-The screenshots accompanying the review were taken on low settings, with a low resolution. The reviewer complained about graphical quality? on high settings, 1680x1050, a friend with an 8800GT gets 50+ fps constantly. And the game looks far, far better than with everything on low.

Here's my question:
If an MMO is a niche MMO, would you say the majority of people who go looking for reviews of it would be the target demographic?

I would say that is a safe assumption.

If that is the case, why would you as a reviewing site have your writer who isn't interested in the game or a part of the target demographic review the game?

Shouldn't you be catering to your audience (aka the people who found your site searching for "this MMO reviews")?

All of this just reminds me of stupid US politics that is now basically a football game where it is my team versus your team. People don't think for themselves anymore, they join whatever team they're told to, and they defend it with their life.

I just don't get it. To me it is like some sports website saying how Lacrosse is so dumb and bad because I played it this one time. Football is way better.... That is bullshit. People have opinions and guess what, they differ from time to time. Why can't people just accept this?

My guess is they have some people who 'know MMOs', by which they mean they have a level 80 WoW character.

At some point, sites like EuroGamer will have to accept that not all MMOs are the same -- they're not all watered-down EQ knockoffs -- and that different you need different perspectives and different reviewers, much like you would when reviewing Madden and Empire: Total War.

Until then, you'll have this situation: a freelancer who is way over his head, playing a game he clearly hates and which is not targeted at him, but who needs the money and will review it all the same. I don't even play Darkfall, but the review really came off as the complaints of someone who would never pick up a PvP game in a million years.

Well that what you get when you build a niche game some people are just not going to like it including reviewers.

What, this game is actually available to play now?! You wouldn't know it from the website. Smacks of amateurism.

I don't even need to play it to tell you it rates 2/10. Their over-reaction is merely making them look bad.

LOL - "I don't even need to play it to tell you it rates 2/10"

Dan, either don't post from your middle school classes, or learn what deductive reasoning is.

The only thing you "don't need to" do, is post when your opinion is 100% invalid, and stupid.

9 hours to review an MMO? Seriously? What does it matter if it was 2 hours or 9 hours. He spent at max 9 hours to review an MMO.

Did he think he was reviewing peggle or something? MMOs take more than 9 hours to review.

Again - The thing sensible Darkfall players want, is a review from EG that doesn't have major factual errors. Is that too much to ask from a major gaming site like EG?

I'd have thought professionalism dictated that as a journalist, you'd be expected to get the basic facts right. That's what stinks so much - that he didn't even bother to do that.

Mate...where have you been for the past 20 odd years? Facts, Professionalism and Journalism are words that simply do not ever belong together! Have you even read a newspaper or watched what passes for News/Editorial Opinion in the last few decades??!?! Why the hell would Gaming be any different?
