I really hate that word "carebear" FFS!

Darkfall is going to die soon as they can't even release the game yet to the public. Its been out almost 3 months now, and people still can't get in... its so hardcore that it sucks!!

It would appear that Eurogamer agrees with you, dantevengence.

wow that review is pathetic! LOL! I love how these companies don't feel obligated to give it a good review because of how bad it is... this is awesome...

2/10 from Eurogamer!

The Eurogamer review is grossly inacurate on many accounts. For example, "It takes 5 or 10 seconds to change weapons", nope try 1/10th to 1/2 of a second. Also, it sounds like he wrote that review before he fought anything besides goblins.

I am very happy being referred to as "carebear"

I always like in DAoC, WoW and Warhammer when folks would make a rallying cry in General Chat and I'd reply with "Maybe we can try and make them our friends. Have you tried just giving them hugs?" or "Fight other players? No thanks, too challenging. I'm gonna stick with these level 1 mobs in the training zone."

Pretty much sums up the professional, dedicated attitude the Darkfall staff have for their game, and thus the reason why it is such a stellar example of 'hardcore' (read: so awful you need to be h-core to take teh strain) gaming at its best.

Seriously, I wasn't driven away from this game because of it being difficult or a dog-eat-dog world (that was what attracted me to it in the first place). I was driven away because of its terrible quality and community.

Honestly, if you want a good 'sandbox' experience EVE is pretty much the only way to go.

i'm ok with being a "carebear," if the other option is "hard-core pvp ganker dick"

Funny, I'm quite enjoying the game. And at least to some degree I consider myself a carebear (I agree with having safe spots and alignment mechanics).

That said, I'm see myself leaving Darkfall in the future. Not because of the game mechanics, which I quite enjoy. I can't express how refreshing I found the game to be when I first logged on. IT FEELS LIKE A WORLD! No insta-travel is a huge plus to me (and was a huge letdown in WAR, making the 'world' feel like a neighborhood). And slow looting, meaning you can't loot a corpse in or out of combat without putting yourself at risk. VERY refreshing.

So why am I likely to leave? Because of the lack of forum and in-game chat moderation. Too many users use the 'mature content advisory' as license to post content that in should come with an IMMATURE content advisory. It's really tiring. That said, I've yet to run into any in-game trash talk from people that have killed me (unfortunately happens a lot), which I understand is the typical 'fear' keeping many from such a sandbox PvP game.

So it shouldn't come as a surprise that, despite my expectation of leaving, I won't be doing it until Mortal Online is released (or I get into beta), as it seems to promise everything I'm getting from Darkfall--just with better moderation.

Interesting. I've been wanting to get into Darkfall for ages, and everything you mentioned is how I pegged it. I love the idea of no insta-travel. The sandbox gameplay and so on. I'm not a hardcore PvPer, but I do see potential for a lot of fun in other regards. I'm not anti-pvp... it's just not the be-all-end all for me. Then again, maybe it's WoW PVP that turned me off.

Anyway, looking at Darkfall the last few months, the only major criticism I could come up with was its forum community and the lack of moderation. As you say, a 'mature content' advisory isn't a license to be an immature asshat.

Profanity doesn't bother me, but the kind of people who use it excessively do. So here's hoping they either start smacking the kiddies into shape, or Morrtal online works out to be what you think it will.

My favorite line from the review;

"Ultimately, this game has nowhere to go but up in quality."

I don't think that's quite the compliment they think it is.

That review is pure trash. Why do I want to read a review about someone complaining about how they die?

Half the review is complaining about dieing or not liking the backpack system (that I loved UO btw.) If someone posted a review of WoW where they just complained about getting jumped by the opposite faction people wouldn't give it 2 cents.

In all fairness how does one review an MMO? Most require hundreds, maybe even a thousand, of hours to get to the "real" game, no one on a deadline has the kind of time. Age of Conan got the model right, build a real slick 10-20 hour "pre-game" then deliver crap for the rest, and the reviewers raved about the game.

On the other hand though, as a paid journalist, he should have done at least some preliminary research. I could have written a similar review without even having played the game, just conjuring up images of a what a "harcore, sandbox PvP" would look like. I guess I wont trust Eurogamer for game coverage I suppose.

Welcome to our discussion Mr. Fanboy! :)

WoW is old, who cares... Darkfall is still not released even though they have been selling accounts randomly for 3 months... why defend this pathetic game? Wait I know, because you wasted $50 on it.... so you have to defend it because you don't want to feel like a dumbass... ;)

There have been ample warnings from experienced gamers who were around in the days of UO: we all said that most people would not care for this game. Even UO fans were forced to admit that most people would not care for this game.

So really, how can anyone pretend to be surprised at how truly awful Darkfall has turned out?

My day in darkfall

I logged in today in an allied guild city, where we deployed to help defend against raiders.
Grab some armour and weapons, a potions or two and my mount from the bank and await a party of 5-6 of us to form up do take a quick peek at the enemy stronghold.
30 minutes later i'm dead. my party is dead. and 4 times our ammount of enemies are dead and our allies are swarming over them wile we distracted them with shiny armour.

some 3 hours later, after some crafting and mining we get the call that 50-70 enemies are incoming.

knowing the poor defences in place of the city, we quickly wrap up crafting, gear up and await the inevitable magic and archery barrage.

1 hour later i die. 45 minutes of that were constant combat.both close range, long range, mounted and with the Wall cannons.

i log out for dinner, take a shower and get back on to return the favour and get some enemy armours... i'm runing low ;)

that is my average day in darkfall. some days i might just hunt mobs that skin for nice materials for my enchanting skill... some i might trade with other people... some are pure pvp and others are guild events and even fishing is fun if you have a moving raft and 20 enemies ;)

In darkfall... you die. period.
In darkfall... you will be ganked, griefed, goaded, nerdraged and bitched at.
In darkfall... you will spend 2 hours hunting, get killed and loot.

in darkfall... you will walk in an enemy city and destroy their assests as revenge on their raid.

darkfall is a game very much made or broken by it's players. and currenly, the forums are a VERY BAD place to look at for the current players base. i've met my share of assholes... but at least here i have the option of kicking thier arses. i dont in most other games.

I'm defending the game. The review is bad. Having been in game I know that. I made a comparison the an MMO I thought people could understand, but I guess not.

Temko, at least you don't have to get bombarded once a week by the Merc's ships like my alliance heh.

Defending a game is a ridiculous waste of time. That reviewer hated Darkfall. You love it. Both of you are entitled to your opinion, and that's exactly what a review is: an opinion. He just happens to get paid for his.
