I would of put Atlantica and Requiem high on the list. Requiem's physics are actually really cool...and bloody...and the fighting is actually pretty fun!

Runes of Magic ain't that great to ME it feels like Classic WoW (Pre BC and Wrath) mixed with Guild Wars and served with a couple origional ideas on the lemon of a cash shop.

Parts of the game are OK BUT:

Quests suck. Period. There is little to no story involved its all Runescape Classic type MEGA symplistic 1 step story. There are Elites that require groups but you can't tell that untill you have soloed your way up to them. And most things are suipid kill X gather Y. I can stand a few of those as part of a story or as filler but not 100% all unrelated kill quests.

Balance SUCKS MONKEY BALLS: (I solemly swear not to curse at Blizzard ever again about balance issues) My mage at level 3 with no talant points assigned out damages my buddys talented level 6 rogue............

And finally sound is miserable and music when present is horrid. But its free so better than nothing.

I think the criteria here are games where item mall purchases and subscriptions, even if offered, are not necessary to either continue leveling your character/careers/etc or to visit all zones of the game.

Free Realms does currently fit that model and the things you pay for are not required.

Now, is it frustrating to come up to a quest you can't accept, a minigame you can't play, or a job you can't take? Sure. And, if the kids in my family are any indication, Sony set things up pretty well to make sure younger players will be asking their parents for subscriptions in no time flat. I can't exactly fault a business for doing that, but any parent who allows their child to play should expect to pay at least a little for the game at some point.

Yes, you can play it outside of America, but only in certain regions. I'd recommend checking their site and seeing what they say.

Sorry but all of this games suck.... Free Realms is a card base gameplay and if you are like me and hate card games and trading cards stay away of this crap!

Runes of Magic - want to be like WoW/Guildwars but to get the full xp and a mount you got to put down some money and the money can be more them one month of wow feeds!

Other games on the list are all crap there is even some turnbase combat game there!

What a complete and utterly uninformed, useless, and not to mention grammatically horrendous comment.

Free Realms is not "a card base gameplay." The only card-based gameplay is in the - gasp - Trading Card Game therein. The rest of the game has varied gameplay styles, from minigames, puzzle games, combat, kart racing, and so forth. Uninformed remark number one, shot down.

Runes of Magic does not REQUIRE you to pay money to get full experience and a mount. You CAN pay money for an experience boost or a mount, but you don't HAVE to. Besides, think of it this way. If you're going to play Runes of Magic instead of WoW - not that I do; I presently play neither one - that's $15 per month you aren't spending on WoW. Ergo you are free to pay that $15 - should you deem it suitable - to Runes of Magic to buy experience boosts or a mount or whatever you feel like.

I personally am not a fan of item shops as I feel it gives an unfair advantage to those who have more money to spend, however that does not mean that you are REQUIRED to spend money at all. You can play the game as intended without spending a dime. The money is only for extra incentives and bonuses. Uninformed comment two is down.

And for the hat trick, "Other games on the list are all crap there is even some turnbase combat game there!"

Ahaha. Where to begin. Okay, first, if you think they're "crap," that's your opinion, but the thing that really gets me here is the phrase, "there is even some turnbase combat game there!" Barring the lolwut-factor, the fact that you're saying that like a game being turn-based automatically makes it bad is just hilarious. Lots of people love turn-based games, and many games that are turn-based do it very well. But that's not the point. The bottom line, really, is this: There are no turn-based combat games on that list. Every single one of them is real-time combat.

Urgh. Internet. Rage.

I will vouch for AO and PWI needing a place there but maybe they were 6 and 7?

Free Realms - is it just me or is that a lagfest? I play on a dual p4 2.0ghz, 1g ram, and a gforce 7800 256mb vid card. I can barely move around and after trying to do the first quests around the farm, I gave up and didn't log back in. I also had been excitedly waiting for this so my 6 and 9 y/o boys would have something to play that I felt was G-rated content. Now I am completely disappointed. I also found no way to tweak the vid settings to maybe give myself better than 5fps. Any ideas?

Well sorry for the grammatically horrendous comment I learn my English of playing World of Warcraft.

Anyway yes I dislike love turn combat systems and think its the easy way out! Real time combat or the kinda real time World of Warcraft is using is that way to go for me! And look like many Game designers agree with me all the last few mmos did come out with some kind of real time combat system!

Also my "Crap" reason is that most of the games on the list are really Japanese RPG style that is pretty hard to can stand if you are like me and think the Manga style is painfully bad.

Runes of Magic does REQUIRE you to pay money to get full experience
a mount is a big part of the experience this days for any mmo! And to sale this in a game item shop is a joke... Also I believe in fair treatment of players no matter of they have money on there account or not! So allow transfers to buy experience boost your game can go to hell for all I care.

Free Realms gives justice to the motto "Jack of all trades, master of none."
The game is make for kids, (I do not have a big issue with that like I am a big nintendo fan) and is a sony game so things will turn to the worst sooner or later.... beware.

Grammar excused, and apologies.

Regardless, the point of this article was to list the best free-to-play games, which it did. Of course they won't be up to the standards of most AAA titles like WoW, and most will offer item shops that give benefits to paying customers. It's not ideal, but they're still free-to-play.

It's a matter of opinion that you don't like turn-based games, or games with anime art styles, but that does not by any stretch make the games "suck."

You don't have to spend money on a mount. You can rent a mount using in-game gold if you want to. Also, there are a number of item shop things you can buy using tokens, which you can earn in game by doing daily quests.

Based on the criteria you gave, I'm not sure how you can consider Free Realms to be a free game, because it's just another freemium game. It has an item mall like Wizard 101, but it also has content you can only access if you have a monthly subscription, also like Wizard 101.

So considering this list isn't supposed to include freemium games, Free Realms shouldn't be on the list because it is most certainly a freemium game.

Yeah I do agree that Runes of Magic is by far the best on the list! I did play Free realm and everything is base on dumb mini games! It looks like one of that Wii Party games!!! You can not just go out and kill some bad guys or boars even you simply suck walking in some over world that btw the graphics and voice over are great! But you can not do anything!! You go to dual or choose to start a crap mini game!! I did dual someone and it did take forever to complete but I won in the end ;)

How ever I hate mini games I just want go out there and start hitting stuff with a quest under my belt.

My free realm toon will meet his early dead but RoN earn a season try!

I had to come back and give a quick up date. It must have only been the Beta, initial 2 server, lagfest I came into because I reinstalled last night hopped on a med traffic server and it ran as smooth as butter. :)

My kids already have a character at level 3 I think - they were exploring, cooking, racing, fighting........I don't know but it looked fun.
