Today's the day! The crowd over at Sony Online Entertainment are throwing open the doors to their new casual, fun for all ages MMO, Free Realms, and you're all invited. For those of you (maybe all, what, two of you?) who haven't noticed the deluge of Free Realms news we've put out since beta started, SOE has sent along a special video featuring their mascot, Chatty the Squirrel. At least, we think that's a squirrel.
Regardless of just precisely what the madly-coiffed mammal is, one thing you cannot deny is that Free Realms boasts a lot of fun mini-games, a variety of things to do, and the always welcome price tag of free. So while we're waiting for the servers to come up later today, why not enjoy the new Free Realms official launch trailer behind the break. It was voted 'most likely to earwig you with that catchy theme song' by its class.

Don't watch that video.
I am a Free Realms Beta tester anxiously awaiting this game's launch today but that video makes me think twice about playing.
For those who watched the video the game is still fun for adults. No required dance-offs or virtual socializing. I PROMISE!

From Wikipedia...
"The flying squirrels, scientifically known as Pteromyini or Petauristini, are a tribe of squirrels (family Sciuridae). There are 43 species in this tribe, the largest of which is the woolly flying squirrel (Eupetaurus cinereus). The two species of the genus Glaucomys (Glaucomys sabrinus and Glaucomys volans) are native to North America, and the Siberian flying squirrel is native to parts of northern Europe (Pteromys volans)."
I would imagine this one was a Pteromys volans chatticus mohawkicus.

Dude, the only thing I've gotten from SOE in regards to Free Realms was an earwig and my butt kicked in Tower Defense. :D

Would be cool if Massively readers got nifty free stuff. I hope it launches soon.

With all due respect, this isn't true. Everyone here at massively loves MMOs and it's only natural that we'll be excited about a new MMO being released. You'll find the same kind of coverage leading up to any new release.

Maybe it's Michael Zenke's new game at SOE and they are helping an old colleague out. Who knows. I doubt they are being paid by SOE. The site isn't nearly as bad as MMORPG.COM is and their slobbering love affair.

They have hardly mentioned the launch over there. I think they are being very cautious due to the massively hateful SOE haters that hang out there.

Yeah, I thought the thing was supposed to go live today. I guess the miracle patch wasn't?

Those that are uncomfortable with their masculinity need not apply.
You will try this game, and love it. Then soon after you will wonder if perhaps you're just a little more gay than before. Short answer? Yes. You are now at least 15% more gay.
After achieving level 20 chef during beta, I believe I'm now qualified to come out of the closet, thanks free realms!

Ummm, yea. I was training a pet during beta, and I was like wow. I am so glad no one I know can see me doing this. I think Free Realms is going to be a lot of people's "Dirty little secret". :)

I was complaining earlier about the over-exposure to Free Realms, but then some other articles started appearing again. I don't care all that much if there is salivation over a particular launch - just not when it feels like it is distracting from other MMO news out there.
Still, I would like to see more scoops, in-depth interviews, cutting reviews, and behind-the-scene coverage of MMOs. There has to have more stuff in there.
