In terms of in-game originality, EverQuest II should probably win a prize. They're implementing a new feature in GU52 which will let players pen their own stories and distribute the books to other players. Think Lulu but with an EQII twist. Granted we're not talking War and Peace here but for anyone who has dabbled in fantasy fiction or would love nothing more than to pen tales of their character's exploits then this is definitely a feature for you.
Rothgar (aka dev Greg Spence) has put up a post explaining how the whole thing works - as well as sharing the first page of his masterpiece, Death of a Dragon. Essentially the process is simple: nip to your local crafter and buy a blank book. Once you start writing, that book becomes tied to you the author. According to Rothgar, there's no limit to pages but there is to words. For example, this screenshot shows 16% of the book has been used up which probably means around four pages of text.
Those concerned about losing their previous works in progress will be pleased to know there is an auto-save function built in. But once you've written your masterpiece, what do you do with it? Well you can easily copy the book to another blank tome, then you can give out copies to your friends or even sell them via a broker so the entirety of Norrath can read your tales.
As MMO innovations go, we're quite excited by this. It's a small feature which promises to encourage EQII players' creativity and we hope something similar should be included in other MMOs.

"In terms of in-game originality"
Sorry Lesley Smith, but this was actually in Ultima Online. You could write in the books. Like heritage items, and the such, EQ2 is just rehashing ideas that have already passed. I'm not saying it's not a good idea, and I'm glad they're adding it in, but they aren't revolutionizing the wheel with roundness or anything of the sort.

Lesley was probably 8 when UO was released, so you can't really hold it against him/her that they have no clue. Of course, it's probably not a good idea to go swooning about an "innovative" feature if you don't have a lot of experience with MMOs and their history.

In that case I was 18 and I'm also female. I was referring to the fact they were not only encouraging people to write but also allowing their copying and distribution in such a way, hence the Lulu reference.

Yes, you could buy blank books, write in them, and sell them. From launch in 1999.

The social online game called There has had this option for years...at least 5 or 6. I used to write poetry books and give em out. In fact, I still have old books I wrote in my in-game inventory.
Still, congrats to EQ2 for doing this...great for role-playing!

I believe UO took it one step further actually. Didn't books you wrote actually show up in other places in the game. I seem to remember finding a copy of a book I wrote on a book shelf or something.
It's been a long time though, so I may me "mis-remembering."
