"In terms of in-game originality"

Sorry Lesley Smith, but this was actually in Ultima Online. You could write in the books. Like heritage items, and the such, EQ2 is just rehashing ideas that have already passed. I'm not saying it's not a good idea, and I'm glad they're adding it in, but they aren't revolutionizing the wheel with roundness or anything of the sort.

Yeah, UO had this in 1997. Nothing new here.

Lesley was probably 8 when UO was released, so you can't really hold it against him/her that they have no clue. Of course, it's probably not a good idea to go swooning about an "innovative" feature if you don't have a lot of experience with MMOs and their history.

In that case I was 18 and I'm also female. I was referring to the fact they were not only encouraging people to write but also allowing their copying and distribution in such a way, hence the Lulu reference.

Didn't Asheron's Call have some form of in-game writing, too?

Yes, you could buy blank books, write in them, and sell them. From launch in 1999.

I LOVED writing short books in Asheron's Call.

The only that was missing back in the day was being able to duplicate the books for mass distribution :)

The social online game called There has had this option for years...at least 5 or 6. I used to write poetry books and give em out. In fact, I still have old books I wrote in my in-game inventory.
Still, congrats to EQ2 for doing this...great for role-playing!

Yeah.... Asheron's Call did this a decade ago. No prize for EQII. Though it is nice to see something like this make a come back.

I believe UO took it one step further actually. Didn't books you wrote actually show up in other places in the game. I seem to remember finding a copy of a book I wrote on a book shelf or something.

It's been a long time though, so I may me "mis-remembering."
