I am one of those people that wishes the time and effort spent on creating these holiday themed events was spent in other ways.
I have enough Easter, Christmas, Hallowe'en in my real life and these games are, for me, a diversion from that. For the most part these holiday events turn into time limited grind sessions with a carrot at the end, and all the creativity in the world can't hide it.
Instead, I'd love to see some GM run live events based on actual game lore (whatever that game may be).
That said, it seems some of these companies have done well with the route they've taken as so many people seem to take part in them.

I disagree grok, without these holiday events the game is stale. I understand the need to escape from RL but these events are still an escape. I don't always participate in them and even when i do it's almost never to their full extent but its very important to me to have that break from the avg day in wow and see banners and tables with food and silly things running around.
It not only creates a special time when you are playing then, but the break it gives makes those normal days special too.
just my opinion.

I kind of agree with both of you guys. I definitely think it is great that these games have events, but most times, their events are just thinly veiled mirrors of real life holidays. I appreciate lotro's spring festival for it at least seems like it fits into the lore. So lotro has my vote with this discussion; the maze was fantastic and I really liked learning all the racial dances.

Well, not LoTRO. Spring festival was pretty much a disorganised and buggy failure.
From system and network problems to a non functioning horserace to rubberbanding to not even saying what the end date will be before terminating the festival without notice.
Oh, and let's not forget 40,000 blueberry tart recipes spamming up our mail and inventory.
Let's hope that the Summer festival is better planned.

I liked the LotRO Spring Festival. That Hedge Maze was oddly addictive. I loved it.
