I've just canceled my last remaining subscription account. There are really three reasons why.

The economy is one reason. I did want to cut back expenses and my MMO account was an easy choice to make for the cuts. It's only $15 a month, but that money can help out in other areas.

I've also met a wonderful lady who is increasingly taking up my free time. We're having a lot of fun together and I can't see staying home to play an MMO when I could be spending time with her. Sure there's the option to play together, but I'd much rather be spending quality time with her in the real world as opposed to a virtual one.

Finally, the free-to-play options are really nice right now. I've latched onto Runes of Magic and I'm taking a look at Three Kingdoms. Runes is a really great title which, in my opinion, is on par with any subscription MMO out there, including WoW and WAR. When I do have free time, I can hop on and play a while without worrying about the monthly bill.

I guess there really is a forth reason, now that I think about it. I just haven't had the fire in my belly to worry much about an MMO anymore. To me, they've become repetitive and a little bit boring over the years I've played. Questing is a monotonous activity that rarely changes, raiding is the same old thing in a different location, and PvP has gone stale. There's very little variance in titles and I'm not enthused anymore. Arguing about whether WoW is better than WAR is better than EQ is better than AoC is a bit like arguing which shade of gray is your favorite.

Pretty much sums up where I'm at, without the "I've met someone" factor (already have an awesome MMO playing other half). No fire + economy in the toilet = Free To Play for me

@papagouda
You absolutely made my night as I haven't laughed so much, with such belly-aching fervor, in a long time.

No, not because of anything you wrote above (I, also, am thoroughly enjoying my romp in Runes of Magic at the moment, and I agree with you 100% regarding a lack of motivation to chore through mind-numbing collect-a-kill-quests that used to be fun in 2005, for a monthly fee)..

..none of things things caused me to choke on my drink.

What *did*, however, was the following:

If anyone can survive until the end of this clip without wetting their pants, then I salute you.
(papagouda seriously - this game? or is the clip merely 'unfortunate'?)

I haven't done much more than download it, log in, and roll a toon. I don't think, at least I hope, that's not it. That video was just bad.

Two accounts here, but not for the reason you gave, since both accounts are with LotRO. The reason is so I can play along with my kids. Plus, at $10/month, LotRO is one of the better subscription deals out there.

Officially one. But my cancelled CoH account still has time on it. Otherwise loving Warhammer.

I have a WoW account, and several free ones. Don't really play any of them. lol

Course I'm from Canada, and weren't hit as hard as the States so it doesn't bother me much.

Restarted my WOW account a few weeks ago. I still have my WAR going, but I don't know for how much longer, the end game in WAR really disappointed me and I'm not sure if I want to stick around after my 3 month sub is up. =\

Other: I am currently beta-testing one MMO and hoping to fill "the void" with a few other betas until a game I am interested comes out. Considering I got burned with a whole series of games that didn't cut the mustard, I am wary of trying another one until I know its decent.

There have been times where I've had four or five active accounts at once, especially if you count the year I couldn't find my ID code for my FFXI account and therefore couldn't cancel it. Of when I forgot I had PSO still active.

But in these economic times, I've had to cancel WoW and WAR and stick to playing just CoH. And as much as there's other games I'd like to go try, they don't trump CoH in the budget allocation department (my wife). So one MMO it is.

Two accounts, WoW and EQ2. These days I raid twice a week in WoW (when the servers are stable and people show up), spend weekends with my girlfriend, and fill in my remaining free time with EQ2. I'm sure that I will drop one of the games in a few months, but I'm not sure if I would replace it with LOTRO or not.

Just one. The economy hasn't spurred me to eliminate my subscription, but it has played a factor in refraining from trying any new games with monthly fees. I have made cuts elsewhere, such as holding off on major purchases, saving more, and cutting down on beauty services. I'll stop getting my hair done altogether before I quit my single MMORPG. ;)

Oh no, please don't do that. :)

There are few enough girls in MMOs to let yourself end up like...

Just one for me, my LOTRO lifetime account. I like playing betas to try new games, and I'll probably be giving some of the upcoming games a try (DCU Online, TOR definitely) and likely giving Eve another go when/if they get Walking in Stations out. It's not so much the monthly fee as an issue with me, but the fact that I don't have tons of free time, and paying per month for something I might not use is kind of painful. I love the LOTRO lifetime just for that -- if I don't have time to play for a month, it's not going to really cause me any grief, aside from housing maintenance in-game. :)

I have to admit that housing maintenance is a little off. I went for a walk around my village last night (0 free properties) and at least 80% were inaccessible for failure to pay upkeep, including 2 of the three kinhouses!

Maybe it should be allowed to be paid more in advance.

"None. I'm just reading Massively until a game I want to play comes out."

Not for lack of trying - I keep buying into hype, but keep being disappointed.

I'm still excited about distant - and not-so-distant - MMO games though, but just the ones promising something different e.g. Champions action gameplay or TOR story-telling.

N.B. Not currently in work though, so won't even consider keeping a subscription fee game going just in case the mood strikes me.
