Reports I've heard are that it does the job it is intended to do. (...which means if you buy it you probably won't be surprised by it not doing the job. A problem several iphone IM apps suffer from.)

One thing to keep in mind is that the current iPhone / iPod Touch OS doesn't allow applications to run in the background, which limits the behaviors available to many of the communications apps on the device, making it clunky to switch in and out of them to do anything apart from pause, play and skip music tracks. This makes IM style programs more clunky than they need to be (as they're the kind of thing one switches in and out of often.)

Extended services (push) in iphone OS 3.0 due later this year should generate an increased number of services of this type, but anything as slick as what's on your pc may take a while longer.

I just downloaded this application and it seems to work really well. It beats Ajax hands down in comparison. The only thing I am disappointed it doesn't have is a disconnect button, you just have to close the app my holding down the home key for 5 seconds.

As for the price, well once you have paid $19 for Beejive (which happens to be the best damn IM program on iPhone) you will hardly sneeze at a $5 application. You get what you pay for.

Frankly I''m underwhelmed with Sparkle but I'm looking forward to updates. As far as beating Ajaxlife, you need to use the IPhone optimized Ajaxlife site at https://ajaxlife.net/iphone/#_login ? Unlike Sparkle, it allows you to receive TP requests and it has a log off option whereas in Sparkle, you need to exit the application. Also, when you receive an IM, it shows it as pop-up even when you're not in the IM section - with Sparkle, you get a badge notification. On the flip side, Sparkle identifies the region you're in and allows you to send a TP request, but since I can't see where I'm at or move around, I much rather have the ability to receive TP requests from those who can. The other positives for Sparkle is the ability to save login information and receive a friend request. Both programs are limited to local chat and IM, not including group IM. I'm hoping that Sparkle will continue to improve and perhaps get some kind of graphical interface.
