In the free-to-play market, the competition is fierce. It seems like we hear about a new game being ported and launching just about every week, and have for the last while. That said, Runes of Magic, the recent entry into the market by Runewaker Entertainment in partnership with Frogster Interactive has definitely caught our attention in playing through the game recently. That's why we were glad to hear that they've announced 700,000 players are checking out this interesting new world. According to their press release, response has been so good that they've been required to add another European server to their line-up for a total of nine launch servers altogether. They've also had to lock down character creation on the Laoch and Aotacht servers due to population, and state that if any other servers reach max, they've got the infrastructure in place to open more servers should the demand become greater.
With mechanics cribbed from everything from World of Warcraft to EverQuest II and even a bit of Warhammer Online and Final Fantasy XI for good measure, this is definitely one of the strongest new titles to hit the F2P market in the last while. Just how large the game will continue to grow, considering it reintroduces some less popular mechanics like death penalties and a fairly involved tradeskill system remains to be seen. Still, it's a good sign for Runes of Magic, and we wish them all the best luck on the future of their game!

I'd take a look at the _actual_ crafting system in Runes of Magic before calling it anything, let along "fairly involved." Here is the _entire_ tradeskill system: gather three types of mats. Press one button to refine them. Press one button to craft items. Yes, there are rare mats, so if that makes it an "involved" process, there you go.
It seems more like a "fairly grindy" process, since you need up to 72(!) mats to refine a single item for a rare. If a node has five mats, you have to click the node five times, once per eight seconds or so.
It is also a "fairly useless" process with quest rewards and world drops literally being better than crafted items with a single exception that requires raiding a dungeon.
So, on the Govinda server, folks sell the raw mats for tens of thousands of gold and call it a day.

Yeah, I would hardly call the crafting here "involved". Slow would be a better word. Still, this game is pretty great for a f2p.

Well first lie noted already...
The say they have 700 K players and have .... 9 servers.
Everyone in the industry knows that there is about 10K players per server distributed in a fantasy mmorpg.
Of which about 3 K can be on line at the same time.
So they have the infrastructure for 90.000 players....
I pity the other 600.000. Oh wait those are the "accounts" created ones. You know the guys who registrated on their site.
No need to argue: this is rock solid proof they are already lying about their numbers.
Just check on www.xfire.com I guess they are in the neighbourhood of War and LotrO on the playing list of a very good sample of 150K daily Xfire users.
But hey what did you expect from crooks out Korea letting you pay for in game items.

Indeed looked it up. They are somwhere in position 12-14 at launch in played PC games.
30% under War player numbers and about 30 times less players than the 5.000.000 Wow western based subs.
Roughly (of course) it proves they don't even have 200K active players ... at launch.
Expect to drop after 4 weeks to 100 K max. That's way behind GW - as should be - for such a copycat.
Just watch the server numbers as an indicator because thes guys gonna lie up into the millions if necessary.
