This comments section reflects the reason why I quit after a month-long return to Vanadiel:

NOBODY WAS THERE.

Seriously -- noobville was completely uninhabited. The Auction Houses are barely stocked, and you're lucky if you can sell a stack of crystals for anything approaching what you need to fit at your level.

Nobody talks. Ever. They won't even respond to your direct questions. A good number of players are japanese, and don't take kindly to being cold-called in english. Good luck getting in a group, when you can't even find a mage for a tele or a raise.

FFXI is a veterans game, and if you're not three expansions into it then you're screwed.

Angry Alz is angry.... XD

But no, I understand where you're coming from in regards to that. Sometimes it just is a pain to get people to talk to you or anything like that.

On my server though, the AH is usually always bustling, people are always around, and things seem more lively. Perhaps it's your server, Alz? Which one are you on?

Oh, and hi dear. :D Sorry about not saying hi before. :D

About the controller thing.. Maybe when you first start, a 'PS2-esque' controller will be easier to use, but down the line, a properly customized keyboard layout is vastly superior, at the very least for the sake of macro customization. And all of those gamepad features, like using the d-pad to select targets, can be mapped to the keyboard. Personally, I use the compact keyboard layout, which allows you to assign almost any key just like a button, so I can hit 'G' for my menu for instance, w/o hitting ctrl or alt. Of course, if you want to type in the chat bar, you have to hit the spacebar or '/' first, but that's still better than having to put down your controller to use your keyboard to type.

I should have looked at the author's name before ranting like a loon :P Glad to see you're still doing what ya love, CB.

Either way, I was upset because I'd bought the new updates and was actually excited to get back to the game. Picked the Garuda server because it seemed middle-of-the-road for player population, and found the original three cities completely devoid of any human interaction.

In my defense, I did give it a month, worked my way up to level 20 (though I couldn't get all the items for Dual-Classing), and tried initiating conversations when people were around (most were ignored, some were autotranslated response). I earned most of my items through questing, but when I couldn't even sell a stack of Fire crystals in Bastok for 300g I knew the good times were over. I wasn't going to get my keys to the airship, and without the usual Tele- spam getting around was a laborious process.

The only good thing was that I had all the low-level NMs camped all to myself, though Leaping Lizzy never did drop her boots.

Anyway, I hope others find their start in the game a lot different. My best advice, as with any MMO, is to try it with a friend and work your way up together. Not only does it make progressing easier, but it's a lot less lonely.
