Let's face it - we invest a lot in our characters over time. Maybe you have that one devoted main that you come back to, no matter what happens. Perhaps you've spread your love over a series of alts. Whatever the case may be, the truth is that many of us tend to get emotionally invested in our characters as time passes. We've worked hard, gotten them nice gear, picked up a nice mount, gotten an in-game house, etc. (depending on game). So, when the shine has worn off your old favorite game, and you're at the point where it's time to move on, how do you say goodbye?
The team here have done everything from visiting favorite zones one last time; logging out in a particularly pretty area; throwing a party with friends as a way to burn off back-stocked food/drink; or logging out in the place where we felt we had the most fun in the game. There again, others on the team just logged out and didn't really care, although it seemed like more often than not, that was the case in games we didn't really click with anyway. This morning we thought we'd ask you - when you've moved on from game to game, retiring your old adventuring 'friend' as it were, did you do anything special before you signed out and shut the account down? Or did you just sign out without a second thought? If you did something special, what did you do?

The only game I ever quit with even a small amount of flair was UO. It was my first MMO and it's always the one that's the hardest to let go of. I had 4 7X characters, millions upon millions of gold, some of the rarest dragons in the game as well as a pure black nightmare...To keep the family alive I gifted them to a person I thought was a good friend with the caveat that I could come back at any time. He agreed then promptly ebayed the account within the week.
Since then I have learned to just hit the cancel button and walk away. The characters never get deleted and you just never know when that 38 electric/electric blaster or RR10 dwarf berserker will call you back for just one more go...............

I don't think I've ever made a conscious decision to leave any of the bunch of MMOs I've left. I just find myself logging on less and less, then one day I realize that I haven't logged on for a while and don't have any real desire to do so. So I cancel my account.
So yeah.. the last time I've logged on, I don't think I've ever known at the time that it was the last time.

I have a complete different approach.
My 2 main characters of Wow I will never leave. Simple. They are my alter egos. Have been for the past 3.5 years.
I already said to my son he should take care of them when I "ll be gone out of this side of earth.
My first character in Wow did 70 played days to level to 60. I level my characters very slow and in full RPG. After 4 years I passed exactly 2 times the quest chains in Tanaris.
For WotLK I was extremaly fast: a little bit more than 2 months, because the guild master was pushing me. But the second character is STILL 70 and I play him every 2 days.
You ALL fail to realise how beautiful Wow is. You kill the game with the add ons and help from the web.
I live about 3 hours each day in Azeroth and so it will be for the rest of my earthly life.
The perfect moments are those times it is raining in game and outside. The wetlands is unbelievable in the rain and storm.
This gives me the creeps.
Btw: I tried to play all those other duds. Not one succeded in getting me to play them for longer than a month.
Blizzard has it, the others don't even know what they miss.
I guess my characters will be longer here than me.
I am quite sure Wow will last the next 20 years with ease.
