With the news out yesterday that Champions Online will not be seeing a launch day release to consoles along with the PC client, we're kind of wondering what's coming for the future of consoles in terms of MMO releases. Sure, there are already a handful of MMOs out there in the space: Final Fantasy XI, Phantasy Star Universe, and EverQuest Online Adventures, but they seem to be more the exception than the rule. Age of Conan, promised to be released to consoles shortly after AoC's PC launch, has been beseiged by setbacks and is now only rarely mentioned - if at all. Champions Online has been set back. Free Realms (and likely the other upcoming SOE titles as well), perhaps the strongest potential crossover due to SOE being part of SCEA, will still see console release well after the initial PC launch.
So with all the delays or largely-vaporware-status of several promised console MMOs, we thought we'd ask you this morning - just exactly how important is it to you, as an MMO gamer, that there are more options for MMOs on the console? Do you look forward to the day when you can get a USB keyboard and hook it into your console, to enjoy a round of MMO gaming from the comfort of your couch? Or does it not really make much of a difference for you, as you'll be at your computer anyway; after all, consoles don't tend to offer the option of alt-tabbing out and checking database sites for item drops, locations, tips and other hints. How important are console MMOs to you?

I have zero interest in a console MMO. I wouldn't be able to play one on my 360 -- monopolizing the TV for hours on end just wouldn't fly in my home. Plus, I prefer mouse + keyboard over a controller. And the calibre of people on Xbox Live makes my head hurt... I refuse to even plug my headset in now.

I think in the future (the next year or so) it won't be so divided, PC or Console. SE's next MMOG the successor to FFXI will most likely come out for PC, xBox 360 and PS3. Has been leading the way in cross platform MMOGs and I think more companies will follow suit.
Simply it is amazing to thin when you play FFXI you are interacting with people playing on PCs PS2s and 360s, you are interacting with players from all over the world on the same servers.

I can't wait for a console MMO to make a big splash. I was extremely upset when True Fantasy Live was cancelled for the original Xbox. I can't begin to understand why one hasn't been done at this point, considering the leaps and bounds made by network communication programs like Xbox Live. Just the idea of being able to relax on my couch without all the mouse clicking and macro-using would be enough to sell me, if the game was good of course.

FFXI got me hooked to MMOs. One of the reasons I own a PS3 is to play another like it. It's been disappointing lately because we're only getting casual MMOs.

No interest at all. I haven't owned a video game console since the early 1970s. I'm a PC gamer.

As much as I would love to be spending hours on end working on a character on my bigscreen, it would have to be cross platform. Most people brought up a good point that cross platform mmo's inevitably slow down the development process. That is simply too much to ask for most mmo companies. Only the major players could afford to take such a risk, but the idea of a console WoW does seem like it could bring in more casual players.
The subscription model is also something to be aware of. People using xbox are already paying for online play, you could not seriously ask the hardcore install base to add an additional fee on top of that. And PS3 remains largely free online, it would be a tough sell for both consoles.

Actually, the PS3 release of DC Universe is about the only thing that will entice me to plat that game.
I'm just sick of upgrading computers and STILL having to worry about system reqs within the next year.
I'll gladly trade in the ol' mouse for the peace of mind that comes with console gaming.

I can't wait for the next wave of console mmo's. Granted there are some games that would work now on the consoles.
Guild Wars, Conan, Tabula Rasa (RIP), Hellgate London would all work on a console. Due to there simplistic ui's.
Games using the old formula WOW, EQ2, COX would be a tougher port due to there multiple button actionbars and heavy macroing. FF11 has shown this is possible. This kind of heavy macroing can go way above the average users casual gaming time. It can even be surprisingly daunting and scary for your average console gamer.
Anyone who is a afraid of a watered down port has not played FF11. This game is deep and probably has one of the most solid lores around. It has cinematics and more to do then most supposedly deep PC mmos around. You could play for multiple years and never see and conquer everything.
Reason I don't play it anymore is due to the high level of commitment it takes. I have seen end game boss fights that would make the most solid wow raider scream in frustration. Proto-Omega, Warden, Absolute Virtue (Which as far as I know has yet to be beaten properly.). To be a raider in FF11 takes a special kind of dedication.
I do love the game though and enjoy it when my brother comes to visit and I can watch him run through the end game raids. I even got to run through Dynamis Sandy on his bard. The controller works perfectly fine for end game boss encounters using the shoulder buttons and d-pad are very fluid and smooth for FF11's pacing.
You can bet though when the next round of SOE and SE games come to the consoles I will be jumping on board. Minus the Agency, fps mmo no interest at all.
As of right now you do not need gold to play FF11 and PSO. Just the games subscription fee. People worry about this all the time. As long as companies hold to this standard this will not be an issue. The separate game companies need to make there money as well.
Someone also mentioned the updates not being as huge on a console. Hmm I think FF11 now for a full update is somewhere around 3 to 4 hours after a full install been awhile since I had to reinstall from scratch. It sits are somewhere around 11gigs on an xbox hard drive someone can correct me on this. EQOA most updates were done server side since the file had to sit on a memory card so in most cases we had no idea how big the updates were.

I've no desire to hook up a keyboard to my console, but I would love to play a console MMO that is simply a massively multiplayer version of the types of games I already prefer to play on console, such as vehicular combat, fighting, sports, beat 'em ups, and platformers.
I don't want a quasi-turn-based MMO like WoW on my console, since my couch is too comfortable and I'd fall asleep playing.

I liek the idea of console mmo's. Atleast xbox 360 mmo's. Age of Conan is apparently releasing to the 360 and turbine (The develpoers of DDO and LOTRO) are also working on a console mmo. I like the idea of being able to chill on my couch and play an mmo on my big screen instead of playing on my pc monitor.
