I think that this is a wonderfully balanced assessment of where Warhammer stands at present.

Frankly I quit the game because it was too much like WoW and it wasn't enough like WoW where it mattered. Those who are deeply and personally invested in what Warhammer represents will naturally recoil at the suggestion that WAR is like World of Warcraft but it is, fundamentally. The leveling system and quest grind, which forms the backbone of this type of MMO is unreconstructed from the EQ/WoW archetype. PQs were a brilliant idea but one that relied too heavily on groups being available at all times to do them.

The end result was, to get through the chapters I had to grind Stage I mobs for hours, which made it even *worse* than the usual Kill Ten Rats style questing.

Where the game should have sought to emulate WoW, it didn't. No tactile chat (you can't right click names for any purpose), as well as a very slow and inefficient mail system made things frustrating. /ignore did not work for weeks, and there was very little in the way of protection from gold spammers for almost two months. WoW is made smooth by its oodles of polish. Warhammer lacked virtually any and by the sound of things it still is lagging behind in this respect.

I am also saddened to hear that the Archmage hasn't received more attention. I did feel the class was quite nice, all told, but it was more serviceable than outright spectacular. More irksome is the inability to address spell lag; that caused severe problems when I played. Although combat is slightly slower paced in WAR, seconds matter all the same.

Other ideas were, unfortunately, mockeries of themselves. "Living cities" was a promise that ultimately manifested itself in the form of a grimdark city that one had to fitfully *imagine* was prospering as you saw it gain more stars. Aside from a couple of additional quests and the opening of an instance or two there is very little noticeable benefit to city advancement. I still remember my guildmistress, who was as enthusiastic for the game as I, expecting Altdorf to at least look a little cleaner or shinier or open new shops as the city advanced. No such luck.

Guild ranks were also a fine idea, but some elements of implementation were... iffy. I don't remember the exact numbers but at some high rank your guild finally gets access to a scroll that can teleport you to Gunbad. A low level instance that a guild that high level has long since surpassed en masse. Why not simply install mustering horns/summoning stones? Why make things silly like this?

Lastly, Mark Jacobs' personality never bothered me. Right or wrong in his statements or shameless PR I would infinitely prefer his breathless enthusiasm to the staid automatons that Blizzard fronts to the public for fear of offending exactly the sort of expletive-hurlers who've already spewed in this comment thread.

I don't always agree with Jacobs and often his perspective is 180 degrees removed from mine when it comes to the game. But at least he reassures me he's a human being.

Here's my Mark Jacobs again as usual... Talk... Talk... Talk. Getting emo again and again, we don't need these war of the state issues, we need solutions.

WAR never walked like that Paul guy talked.

And the talk of Mark Jacobs is known to be filled with hot air. Everyone can see that.

I agree with the Warhammer tabletop. Every time I see my miniatures now, I can only think of that bland, idiotic world I dribbled in for 3 weeks. How can such a great TT world be raped by this...

It's always a bad sign if you uninstall a game one week before subs run out.

I would rather try AoC again or even PotBS before this shit will ever hit my HD again.

Better rest in a world that is still fun to play than being frustrated by Myhtic's "hunt for subs".
