It's really hard to roleplay when a thirteen-year-old is thrusting his virtual crotch in my face, screaming "LULZ GUYS! LULZ! Lolololololol!!!!11oneeleven"

You known that in 9 of the 10 cases thats not really a 13 year old but a 40 or even 50 year old doing that...

"rather than spend time using their imagination"

Roleplayers don't have a monopoly on imaginative ways to interact in and with video games.

I read your article with interest, Colin.

I am not into roleplaying, but I always work under the presumption that other players *are* role-playing unless they clearly indicate otherwise.

Thus, I never say or do anything non-RP unless the other player(s) "breaks the ice" first.

I also never NEVER choose stupid, non-RP names for an MMO toon I'm playing. IMO, it's like an advertisement announcing to one and all that the player in question is an inconsiderate moron. (Sorry to sound so harsh, but that's just how I feel.) Nor do I ever respond to an LFF/LFG from a dopey-sounding, clearly non-RP toon name. Finally, if there is an "RP server" option (as with WoW), I will choose that, because it does help, if only a little, with "player quality control."

Even with all that, I still end up in groups with "IpwnU" and the like; it just happens. One cannot weed this sort of thing out entirely in an MMO.

One day some MMO will be introduced with strict RP safeguards and controls. I look forward to that.

In the meantime, LotRO, I'm finding, has a considerably lower proportion of such annoying and inconsiderate players.

How do you roleplay killing the same boss every week?
