What do they expect when they dump the responsibility of hosting and delivering the client on THE FANS.

Pretty lazy thing to do, but oh well. Luckily the game has enough buzz that it had 1.5k+ seeds within the first 24 hours or so.

Yeah, the nerve of them. How can any respectable MMO do this?

Oh, wait. Blizzard do it.

I wonder why?

Perhaps because distributed downloading via BitTorrent allows far more people to get far higher speeds, than a direct download from a single source - regardless of how much bandwidth that source can afford to throw at it?

is this for Beta testers or can we download it and try it without an invite of some sort?

@THAC0

The game is (supposedly) being released tomorrow.
So this is for everybody.

Presumably, you should download the client and then once you pay you will have an account..

Third-party downloads are the only option for some of us whose ISP's hate torrents - provided you've got a decent AV, check before using it / use a "reliable" source it should be fine!

This I think is the usual disclaimer stuff. FFXI does it too. They pretty much are saying "If you choose to use third party downloads, we can't guarantee anything." The part about third-party tools the have to say, especially since they are a skill-based pvp game. If third party apps become common, the game is sunk.

Yep, its all legality. Why this is newsworthy is beyond me hehe.

Happens with every mmo, but I guess today was a dry news day. :P

@k and graille

Comparing this to blizzards patcher just sure pure ignorance on your side. This is nothing like blizz's patcher. All they did was create a .torrent and hand it out with a big whopping *0* seeds and then relied on the players to somehow get it and start making seeds as it goes.

From my knowledge, blizz is at least acting as a seed during the whole thing and it just uses other d/l'ers as additional p2p seeds.

@james taylor

I've read your two descriptions of "what blizzard do" and "what Adventurine have done" 3 times now, and apart from a couple needless/meaningless differences in *how* you described it, I'm having a very hard time finding an actual difference between the meanings.

*reads a fourth time*

Unless you're implying that Adventurine are not acting as a seed at all, which just shows an alarming misunderstanding of how torrents work. If there is no seed at all, then there is no data at all.

If they released the torrent file with zero seeders, how did anybody get the file?

Darkfall is just that hardcore.

I've read on various boards that a lot of activity happens client-side in Darkfall, as opposed to server-side like in WoW and other prominent MMO's. If that's the case and it's relatively easy to hack (which it reportedly is), then staying away from third-party clients is probably a very, very smart thing to do. That being said, what's to prevent somebody from modifying a client file and seeding it? I'm not very knowledgeable about torrents, but if that can be done, then what makes it more secure? Can somebody please elucidate?

They looted it from a freshly-ganked DVD.

They're just covering their asses in case someone does decide to be an asshat.

I used the MegaUpload links that a fairly respectable forum member posted on the forum and they worked far better than the torrent. Installed perfectly and everything.

Just don't be an idiot, make sure the file sizes match if you can, and scan before running. If the torrent wasn't unbearably slow, this wouldn't be necessary.

Yah, plus you get a free copy of WinAnitvirus with every download! Just make sure and buy the products that pop up in the lower right corner of your screen whenever it tells you too and you'll be fine! Also make sure and use a real credit card, ya know, so they can continue to give you great deals.....
