I consider a "Gamer" as someone who played a sort of video games since he was young, at least 10 years old I'd say, there have been MIT studies on the natural advantages of video gamers proving that we have improved multitasking and problem solving advantages.

So, gamers, can pick up any game and excel at it equivocally. Unfortunately this is not true with MMO's, in mmo's we've seen more old tech, clunky UI's, and overall hardware that doesnt make the games feel as user friendly as our console games. (much like the older console games we all know and love)

In effect, a well rounded MMO gamer has to have had previous experience with an old tech mmo, someone who has had the patience to play Everquest or Ultima and know the real hardships some players are still enduring today!

Why? Because there are numerous mechanics from those games implemented into the new titles that have been since improved upon for the newbies. These "new" self proclaimed gamers who may not have played any other game than World of Warcraft have no natural ability to pick up games and play them, they have no idea how long it might have taken to farm those shoulderpads if they were playing Anarchy Online (Enhanced Pads of Dedication took me 14 strait hours,

(Bah My comment got cut off)

Basically, a well rounded gamer needs to have a background in games. These players enrich the experience for all by being those elite overachievers that our new-gamers strive to be! Otherwise our servers would fill up with people who need every helping hand to complete anything, turning the genre into an easymode, no-skill, low requirements, grindfest.

P.S. Stupid comment limiting boxes cut off my well written ending to the comment above!

I think a well rounded gamer at least in the MMO sense is the one that has played the principle games in each varying genre and is balanced enough to be able to extoll the virtues of all of them, and be the devils advocate in arguing for and against.
In this vain I think maybe the recent massively staff essentially trolling the FFA community should go do a month of AC or something. (zing)

A well-rounded gamer is one that can bend easily and adapt to any game environment. His relationship with his screen would be like a new relationship just starting up everytime he switches on a different or new game and with each game the gamer himself can get comfortable within seconds of switching it on and looking at the screen from top to bottom.

Wow, you people are placing WAY too much importance on "us". It's not that complicated, a gamer plays games...weather they be MMOs, consoles or to some extent even tabletops. So if you log in, power up or set-up you're still a gamer. I guess my personal definition of a gamer is "someone who plays games as their hobby".

The question of what makes a "well rounded" gamer can be slightly more complicated, but not by much. My definition of well rounded is someone who can enjoy an MMO, enjoy a few consoles and maybe play some Risk with his buddies over a few pints. All of this while holding down a full time job, a healthy marriage and family life.
