Have you considered traveling into the Old Forest, only to turn back at the first sound of a tree creaking maliciously or a wolf growing threateningly? Fear not, for you are not alone. In fact, many heroes and adventurers find themselves lost and slightly afraid of what's within those dark, ancient woods. And even though Tom Bombadil isn't far away, sometimes he can be a bit tough to find. Which is why Turbine has kindly composed a hero's guide to this potentially nasty locale.
The guide itself is composed of lists of monsters, crafting tips and quest lines for the entirety of the Old Forest. Plus, at the end of the guide it even points players to their next destination. So if you've been stuck in this region of Middle-earth for a while (as many are always likely to do) and want to level beyond your teens, this guide is most certainly for you.

Lord of the Rings where great books the movies where great the games not so much! It was all milked to dead and worst. Peter Jackson was trying to make good movies out of the books what maybe Hollywood people not even want to come near too. And nailed it, little did he known that after all this work the IP was misuse to the dead and milked like a old cow! This game is one of the worst milked dead horses out there... Really strip away the IP what you have a real boring game and a real crappy Warcraft/Everquest clone!

I thought that LOTR online was going to be exactly a scene by scene rip of the films and that put me off as well, but after I got so sick of WoW I was so desparate for a change, I tried it anyway, and I promise you this game has zero to do with the films, no cut scenes, no memories of bad X-box games, it is just pure class PVE.
Sorry, there is no way anyone who has tried this game could think it's a WoW clone, for better or worse :)
It's not a clone of WoW, it's a more grown up PVE game, for people who want in depth stories and atmosphere, rather than the 'PEW PEW' of WoW.
By the way, if you play wow by the way and words like 'PEW PEW' make your eyes roll you would be well advised to try LOTR :) Just a shame there are so few playing it when it is such an amazing game.

Awesome game, and not a clone, definitely; and the most immersive game out there. (And I had played WoW for three years, so I know what I am talking about...)

I left WoW a year or so ago. I thought WoW was fun, but it seemed to become of vacuous and repetitive over time. I was looking for a similar type of world but one that was a bit richer, with a real underlying story, a place that didn't look quite so cartoony and silly (gnomes on mechanical birds anyone? Day-Glo armors?).
I found what I was looking for in LotRO and, ironically, it was the Turbine's recreation of the Old Forest that really won me over to this game. The Old Forest was huge; the Old Forest was creepy; the Old Forest was confusing, with lots of twisting and turning paths and nasty surprises and menacing (literally) old trees. I wandered in but couldn't find my way out.
And, in the midst of being lost in the Old Forest in this game, I realized that LotRO really got this right. When I finally stumbled out of the Old Forest into the relative "safety" of the equally creepy and perfectly designed Barrow Downs, I knew I'd be in this game for a while. As I was savoring my good fortune at being a small part of such a great world -- a barrow wight snuck up behind me and slaughtered me.
Still, I was one happy LotRO hobbit -- and still am.

When LotRO first came out the Old Forest was even more intimidating, dangerous and confusing. There was no map of it. Trees would attack you for no reason other than they didn't like your hairstyle. It was quite common to see someone run by with a train of wolves, bats and trees close behind. It was also quite common to die. The new one is still decent, but I really miss the original Old Forest.
