In an interesting article at Gamasutra, the last days of Ensemble Studios are chronicled to honor the mega studio and what they once were. Regardless of the titles that put them on the map, the studio had some great games in the works. One such game was the Halo MMO, which was confirmed late last year. The project -- codenamed Orion -- has been in the works, in one form or another, since 1998.
According to the article, this project was to be the new focus of the company. There was even a brand new facility being built to house the development of the game. The construction of that building suddenly stopped one day, and Microsoft informed the team that they would be closing down operations. The project originally known as Titan was no more. Check out the entire three-page article for more on the last days of Ensemble Studios.

Awwww....I never knew that Ensemble were closing :( They were probably one of my more favoured developer-company. Real shame. Lets hope their last game - Halo Wars - Is a blast!

Is it just me or does anything MMO + Microsoft always get shut down?

A LOT of this looks like the SOE title The Agency, did some of the folks find their way over there?

From the looks of this, seems like the game was going to follow more of a traditional mmo control format, which almost seems in opposition to the bold and visceral first person game I’ve come to enjoy over the years. A button click toolbar interface just seems awkward when placed with this setting. That being said, I’m not so much disappointed this game got shut down as it seems the halo story found its appropriate home on the xbox.
Nevertheless, it saddens me to hear ensemble is closing due to financial reasons. Video games are a means of escapism for me and to hear that the creator of some truly great experiences if being shut down in this recession is a cold wake up of reality. Here’s to hoping the talented people there find many more projects to put their excellent talents to use.

Too bad for Ensemble, but I am certainly glad this MMO didn't ever actually get made. We really didn't need another game made from an extermely lackluster IP, there's already WAY too much Halo IMO.
