Well while "he believes this live expansion is one of the largest subscription-based content upgrades/addons done by any MMO developer" is obviously a big fib to anyone who has so much as glanced in the direction of CoH or EVE over recent years, I am intrigued by "increased polish (e.g. armour and mount diversity, mail system improvements, enhanced guild rewards, etc.)."

Lack of individuality & individual motivation is my big turn-off concerning WAR, and this is the first glimmer of hope in that regard.

If I were to be a fuss-pot though, the actual wording Mark uses is "new armor and mount color diversity for high-level guilds" - which gives rise to a more pessimistic interpretation of :

* 'New' armor sets of different stats on the same old armor visuals ala 'new' ORvR reward sets.

* Mount diversity = super giant monster rank guild members can buy white horsies rather than brown or black wolves rather than grey.

I shall still be keeping an eye open though, as this is the closest-to-tempting WAR news for me since launch.

Lack of Individuality?

You did read the lore and background to the game didn't you? As well as the reams of dev talk and player forums etc?

You are part of an army, you're not supposed to be an individual. Do grunts in Iraq run around wearing a veritable rainbow of assorted colours? No, they have a uniform. Hence the uniformity of dress/armour styles in WAR.

I don't know how many times it has to be repeated, if you want gay arsed rainbow power ranger crap go back to WoW et al.

;)

"it certainly makes it one of the largest subscription-based content upgrades/addons done by any MMO developer."

Mark Jacobs has a tendency to shoot his mouth off and talk out of his ass, piling WAR with all sorts of supposed "firsts" and "mosts" which turn out to be absolutely false and shows his ignorance towards his competition. Like when he said WAR was the first MMO to release a class to subscribers free of charge, when DDO, LOTRO and CoH had done the very same a long time before.

This "expansion" better be f-ing huge if he wants to come even close to EVE and especially LOTRO free content standards, let alone have it be one of the biggest free content updates ever.

I have to agree w/ Jess.

I'm playing WAR, and enjoying the hell out of it, but MJ is over stating things quite a bit.

I take it with a grain of salt though. When WotLK killed 11 mil subs, things that weren't talked about were how many double accounts, and gold farmers were those accounts. It's spin for sure. And MJ seems to be piling it on pretty damn thick with this.

Yes, it's cool. Yes, people will enjoy it, but these aren't "new" classes. They're the classes that got cut.
I mean, GS and Dwarves are the only race w/out MDPS. It wasn't intended to just not have it. They're being implmented (in a fun way, if CtA is like Heavy Metal) but it's hardly new. I guess saying "the orginal classes have been FINISHED" doesn't have the same ring though.

Really, for all of yesterday's hype, I was left underwhelmed. Not enough to cancel, b/c I have a lot of fun w/ RvR as is, but I was hoping for more of a "what's on deck to improve what's in game now" rather then "Shineys! Look! Comin soon!" carrots

MJ posted later that they don't want to comment b/c things aren't completely fleshed out, but I had just been under the impression yesterday was going to be when we found out.

Admittedly he does avoid a lot of the potential blowback by saying "one of" the biggest and not "the" biggest. From all they've talked about thus far, it certainly does sound sizable.

It doesn't really change the fact that the games you've mentioned have seen huge updates either, though (in the case of LotRO, new zones, dungeons, etc --- I don't think it saw a new normal player class, but it did see new monster player classes). He does pull these games a lot and it certainly does make it seem like he doesn't keep up on the competition... although who knows if that's necessarily always a bad thing.

I have to admit this is the first time I've heard something about the game that's made me consider trying it out again. Of course, that won't be until later in March when most of this starts up lol.

It's annoying how it's being spun as a free expansion... It's a content patch, spread out over a few months. Every major sub-based MMO on the market does this several times a year.

Let's just hope it's enough to keep EA from canning it. Historically they haven't been very tolerant of failed/failing MMOs. I'm looking at you Earth & Beyond and Sims Online!!

I find it interesting that most posts about this announcement focus on the new classes. Sure, the new classes are nice, but the REAL meat of the announcement is the new RvR dungeon.

I also think the negatively concerning classes that were cut in beta is a bit extreme. It really doesn't change the fact that they are adding two new classes, and I think most people will gladly take the 'slayer' over the old 'hammerer'.

The new dungeon is months away, while the classes will be here in a month and a half. But they're all part of the same "live expansion", even though the part with the new classes has nothing to do with the new dungeon.

A misty night, a perfect night
Beneath the cold of the frozen star
You feel the fright, you know I'm near
You never should have come this far
I am alive, you can't kill me
I will survive eternity

Go through the fire walk past the dead
Lost in my eternal maze
Your heart pounds through the mist filled air
Your concentration breaks for me to strike
You've cowered down, you've broken the chain
Now I can freeze your burning eyes

You see me lift the axe, (as) it plunges through your shield
You now begin to panic as you see your chances grow slim
Your running through the endless maze
(You) Turn and I'll be there
A force too strong for you to fight
Your end I'll see tonight ("I'll see your end tonight")

You think you can destroy (me)? You'd better think again
I am eternal terror my quest will never end
I'll trap you in the pentagram
And seal your battered tomb
Your life is just another game
For Satan's night of doom

The actual source of Mark's comments are from the VNBoards, not Curse's Warhammer Alliance Forums. Just FYI that your source is wrong.

Hi beib,

The bottom source and main forum link (in the first sentence) are properly linked to VN (http://vnboards.ign.com/warhammer_online_age_of_reckoning_general_board/b22997/110104040/p1/?691). I did link to the WHA dev post tracker in the final sentence so people could more easily keep track of Mark's posts specifically on the matter. The dev tracker will also link back to the VN post.

:)
