During a recent gala of bigwigs at the Game Business Law summit in Dallas, TX, Richard Garriott joined GameDaily for a brief interview regarding his thoughts on the state of gaming today, and what he would have done with Tabula Rasa if he would have been "in charge."
Garriott explained in this interview that he would have continued to grow the game and sees MMOs more as long-term plays, where Tabula Rasa didn't really get a chance. He believes that the demand is still there for a big MMO, yet the competition is much more fierce. "Everyone just has to deal with it," he laments. As stated in a previous interview, Garriott once again expressed his desire to re-enter the gaming field, yet he's unsure if he'd rather go single-player or multi-player this time. When asked about the possibility of a return to the Ultima series, he said, "The property Ultima is still very near and dear to my heart. I think that if, by hook or by crook, I had access to that property, either in solo-player or multiplayer, I would absolutely love to continue to play in the Ultima universe."

I'm not a big Garriot fan either. His choices in UO and his implementation of Tabula Rasa don't appeal to my vision of "good" MMO design.
His experience marks him as a Grandfather of the genre. But it is perhaps time to pack this guy up and ship him off to the nursery home because all i get from him is 30mph on the 70mph MMO freeway.

After TR and his use/abuse of his fame to get into space, it's hard to take him seriously. I'd love to see the debacle that a MMO would be if we could see Garriott paired up with Brad McQuaid. :)

What's up with this quote?: if he would have been "in charge."
The guy has his name on the box for god's sake?!? I mean really, who the hell was in charge? And if some idiot is going to put his name on a game that someone else is making, then he deserves to be kicked to the side of the road.
Can someone explain what level of stupid this guy is?

I assume he means "in charge of the financing" which he probably wasn't, what I get from the interview is that he likes or better specialises in story telling, something he admits suits better in single player, Tabula Rasa can be played as such and indeed the community has acknowledged it (one request is to be patched for single player), maybe that is the problem and maybe if he tries a single player game to actually produce something good, or even innovative, but so far I still maintain the "captain that abandoned ship" view I have for him.
time will tell.

Agreed with the earlier comment. This is a guy that had enough hubris to put his name on the box, and meanwhile while the game is struggling he decides to go play spaceman. Why would any game company take him seriously anymore. He's shown me, he's not really interested in making games, let alone good ones.
