I think the idea of increasing your shield HP increases your shield HP regeneration needs to be stated a bit more strongly than it has been in this article. This fact makes the skill Shield Management better than Shield Operation and the Core Defence Field Extender pulls double duty.

Definitely. There was of course limited space in the article and so some parts didn't get the emphasis they deserved. But that's something we can discuss in the comments for people reading :).

For passive tanks, the absolute most useful module is the shield extender. This is because the shield recharge is measured in the time it takes to completely recharge it from 0% to 100%. So if you increase the number of hitpoints and your recharge time is the same, you can recharge more hitpoints per second.

Good article, I think it covers most of the topics. I would however liked to have seen a mention of the drawbacks of many shield modules, namely the increased signature radius.

This was mentioned at the start of the second part here but could do with a little elaboration. Armour plates and shield extenders both have drawbacks to fitting them that makes it a little more detrimental to fit larger varieties them on smaller ships. For example, fitting a 1600mm plate on a cruiser will have a much higher detrimental effect than fitting an 800mm plate on a cruiser.

Armour plates add mass to your ship, making it accelerate and turn slower and gain less of a speed boost from microwarpdrives and afterburners. Shield extenders increase your signature radius, which has several effects. Signature radius is used to determine how long it takes an enemy ship to lock you, how easy your ship is to hit with enemy turrets and how much damage you take from larger missiles.

For example, a Caracal will not take full damage from cruise missiles because its signature radius is lower than the cruise missile's explosion radius. It only gets hit by a portion of the missile's explosion, so it takes only a portion of it's damage. But if you fit a large shield extender or two onto a caracal, its signature radius increases and it takes a larger portion of the cruise missile's damage. Small missiles that have a lower signature radius than your signature radius won't be reduced in damage by your signature radius but they can be reduced in damage by your ship's speed. That's something I'll be covering next week when I talk about speed tanking among other alternative tanking strategies.
