I agree with Brannon re: Eve Online. It's awesome that that game's player base is passionate and devoted. And if "AAA" developers can take some specific elements from it and translate that to a broadly-popular product, then I think that's good. But in my experience it takes a special breed of person to enjoy Eve and its, to me, utterly cold and amoral gameworld. The backstabbing, always-watch-your-back style of play that Eve features won't ever be a success on a macro level.

Two things I would personally take over everything on this list (I know some/many games have them, but I'd like to see them EVERYWHERE).

(1) Let me play with my friends - always. This applies to both levels (really good level sync/sidekick type stuff is fine), and the servers/shards themselves. The biggest challenge in coming back to WoW after 2 years was figuring out WHICH of my friends I wanted to play with, because they were all on different servers. Devs: Please go out of your frick'n way to let me play with ANY my friends, any time I want, because that's what keeps me paying the monthly fee (note: $25 to transfer a character to play with my buddies is disgusting and just plain greedy).

(2) Realize that downtime is not a fun game mechanic. The applies to travel downtime (like 10 minute flights, which at times is 30% of my playtime for a night), as well as in-between-fight downtime (IE drinking, IE forced downtime being an actual mechanic/nerf for a mage). Be creative, come up with mechanics that don't stop me from experiencing the fun stuff (for some of just hats content, for some of us its even grinding, but for none of us is it drinking).

And yes I realize that landscape flights are supposed to enhance the "immersion", but as an adult with limited time - they're 5-10 minute loading screens as far as I'm concerned. Bored.

I realize that most of these arguments are aimed at WoW (although I have no idea how WAR launched without a level sync), but that's because I recently decided to give it a try again...

Yes!

I know of many people (myself included) that have gotten 'burned out' of games that they otherwise enjoyed because of trying to 'keep up' with friends so that they could still play with them.

In fact, in general I would like to see more level based games promoting interaction between all player levels. I'm amazed this isn't a bigger issue. There are lots of games that, although they are very good, are old enough that the majority of the player base is very high level. This is a huge barrier for companies getting new subscribers to their game, as they will be all alone playing solo until they catch up with the experienced players. This is not a problem in WoW due to the massive near constant influx of players and rerolls, but for other games it is a serious issue.

The thing everyone is forgetting. Ive heard this so much "Its not as good as World of Warcraft" Of course its not! 11.5million subs and raising every day.

Everyone has their own style that they like. and some like it simple (WoW) some like it based solely on hardcore role playing (Eq2) some like pvp (War) some like it casual sci fi and connected around politics (EvE), Some cant afford to play mmos or don't want to (Guildwars), some like it bloody and graphical (AoC) (cant remember all of them so im mentioning the ones that will and/or have been mentioned here)

The big reason as most of you will find is. You have a bigger chance finding a group of freinds playing WoW than any other mmo (thats how i got pulled in from eq2) and i agree completely with the article your ideas are pretty much like mine. Exept ive found if you want it done yourself then its better todo it yourself. But as i started working on my game (will not be released most likely ever.) i found it hard to get passed the grinding. because its either Talk to this person, Play minigames, Mine, Run to, Raid, go to the place to get a cinematic. theres not very much that can be done else than grinding mobs. But i dissagree about the early-mid game being the most important. If they dont change the content and add more todo i dont think im going to stay in 80 much less have a account. End game is the most important subject in any mmo (or atleast it should be) cause yes it might be boring grinding up to that lvl. but hell it should be worth doing it in the first place.

Also i agree with Sine and PPenguin, I have friends in atleast 4 servers, if u think that 11.5 million people pay for the game $25 a month, people buy the card games (theyre releasing yet Another game... a miniture board game) Character moving, Name changing, expansion packs. they should make enough money to move players free of charge for gods sake.

if blizzard keeps being this crazy i bet soon we will be seeing world of warcraft Covers, pillows andl beer mugs.

I second 909 and Penguin. Level discrepancy that prevents friends or family from playing together is a minus.

And travel and thus travel time for me was always the killer. Those that work for a living (i.e. most likely the ones to pay the subcriptions) dont have 24 hours to play, they usually have the evening, and not tremendously late as they have to get up the next morning. Therefore, it's greatly frustrating when you spend half the night travelling across maps, sometimes 3, 4 maps, just to get to the next mission......then again after that......

Anything to avoid the player/subscriber from feeling like they are getting nowhere, thus, paying to get nowhere/frustrated, thus - cancellation of subscription.

Everyone who has mentioned travel I agree!

Seriously travel times kill fun in games, they just stretch the game for no reason. Feels like filler stuff.

Well thats about it.

It seems all of you are very passionate about the MMO market and put a lot of contemplative thought into it. All of your ideas and suggestions are neat but really, pick up another hobby where you could utilize those contemplative thoughts constructively.

The one things the frustratingly buggy Shadowbane (which I still sort of miss) did so well was travel. If people are your friends they can summon you to them.

None of this travelling all over the play to figure out where the hell they are crap that wastes so much time. (WAR is horrid about this.) I don't know how many times I have tried to get to a group of guildies only for it to take so long either one of us has to leave or I do.

Having a way to travel that people can do to see the world is fine, but making people waste their time doing is just lame. How about a game that has mounts for all levels past say 5?

Since Everquest MMORPGs has gotten worse and worse. That game had an absolutely wonderful community inhabiting a vast and mysterious world. To accomplish things in Norrath required patience and alot of risk taking. It made the player value the time spent in the game world.

If we look at WoW you don't lose anything if you die or fail a quest. It kills the sense of adventure and excitement.
