Having worked customer service/tech support jobs for the last 10 years I can't begin to describe what a mess the entire industry is in. There are greedy managers who have never taken a call ever, and loads of greedly middle managers who likewise have never handled a customer issue either. And what I mean by greedy is these people are the ones moving stuff to India, making decisions on how support is staffed, handled and making policy decisions and many make 6 figure salaries while most level 1 techs are making 8 dollars an hour or less if its offshore (most level 1 techs in India make about 350 dollars a month)

Its ironic too because you're 100% correct - tech support is where the rubber hits the road for most companies. Its the face of the company, the pr department (whether they want to acknowledge that or not - its true), but its also frequently the first to be cut when the going gets tough financially speaking.

I was just let go of a software company you've all heard of - and use - as a top level agent (the next stop above me was engineering). My job got moved to India.

Support is often a huge cost center - it doesn't make money, and most products aren't priced to include support in the cost - I could be wrong on MMO's - I have no idea there, but I suspect its a huge red mark on their finance statements even if the monthly fee covers support costs.

Interesting problem that most companies haven't seem to have solved - and that is products keep getting more complicated, so support costs go up, but companies don't seem to want to pay for it - and neither do customers.
