The Digital Continuum: Five MMOs to watch out for in 2009, part 2
MMO industry, Opinion, The Digital Continuum
32
The next few years are certainly going to be interesting, especially when we get to the point when three superhero MMOs are on the market with a fourth (CoH2) on the way. Just imagine a world where we comic book geeks must choose between four superhero MMOs to play. I can't wait!
Anyhow, getting back to the point: DC Universe Online is especially lucky for its IP, which is most definitely the strongest of all the superhero MMOs currently known to be forthcoming. Although, the rather unfortunate SOE stigma may cause a little turbulence in the formative months that come after any MMO is released. The stronger the launch, the stronger the sustained long-term subscirber base.
The real thing to be concerned over, however, is whether or not a more action-focused combat system will interest people enough to play the game in that mythical sustained long-term form. Age of Conan proved that people are interested in giving an action-formula a try. So if SOE is able to create a smooth, bug-free, action-based DC universe experience I think we'll all be pretty interested in trying it out. And hopefully people won't shun the title because of preconceived notions about what kind of company SOE was or has become.
Which brings us to the last game of 2009 to watch out for: The Agency. If any title can help DC Universe Online by shaking off the chains of SOE's past, it's this one. There are a lot of wild cards in play, but ultimately it comes down to what sort of message gets sent into the gaming industry. Whether or not The Agency is a financial slam-dunk doesn't really even matter. It only needs to meet reasonable expectations while proving to players that SOE is a place where fun, quality titles are made.
But let's not forget the other battle that's taking place in the minds of MMO players: RMT. Depending on the business model for this game (which could also influence DCUO) and how successful it turns out to be, we could see a whole lot of RMT-fueled news hitting us throughout the next year.
I'm fully aware of how skeptical many of you guys are about the whole RMT thing, but it's going to become a bigger part of the western industry in the next year. So we're all going to have to get used to seeing it pop up in our games.
A "kind of" Conclusion
It's pretty tough to try and conclude a look into the coming year. There are certainly other games that are worth watching over the next year like Star Wars: The Old Republic and Star Trek Online. However, I don't really see those two titles being rushed along their respective development roads.
As a sort of runners-up mention, it's likely that in the next year we'll see big announcements from Red 5 Studios and from Cryptic concerning their mysterious third project. I'm pretty convinced it's a pre-historic fantasy MMO where players ride around as cavemen on dinosaurs battling each other. I mean, it just seems so very perfect coming from a company that makes superhero and Star Trek games. Plus, there have been hints in screens and videos released by Cryptic.
I'm sure there are titles I've somehow forgotten that are indeed coming in the next year, in which case I hope someone mentions them to me so I can put them on my list and do some research on them. Until then, The Digital Continuum will be back in the next year!

I agree with you CM! RMT will only be successful if we the players make it successful! A one-time-a-month sub fee is more than adequate for an MMO company to make a decent game. Look at how successful those models have been to-date!
SOE is leading this RMT hysteria and if I personally will not play SOE games due to RMT! I have cancelled all accounts for SOE, removed their games from my HDs and boxed them up out of sight. Other game companies are looking toward SOE to see if RMT is a hit. If it is not they will not want to see that happen with their games and RMT is a non-issue.
As for CoH2, I don't forsee NC being able to release this anytime soon. Of course that depends on how long they've actually been working on it, but with their financial difficulties as of late, I highly doubt CoH2 is coming soon if by 2011/2012 timeframe.
I would be curious to see how it all plays out.
DCUO looks most promising for Supers MMOs, but for the SOE thing...
CO looks good as well. I would like to see / hear more about it first.
STO looks amazing so far! Keep it up Cryptic!
SWToR looks also quite good. I'm looking forward to hearing / seeing more gameplay and immerssion videos from BioWare / LA.

First of all I'm tired of fantasy settings.
1. Jumpgate Evolution: only superficially like EVE. Really a Combat Flight Sim MMO and very fast-paced. There'll probably be some good PvP. It's original and looks great. Codemasters-provided website is super slow, badly designed, and does not bode well for the quality of other I.S. infrastructure or marketing. I will buy this though.
2. Champions Online: No PvP? PvE games are getting boring for me. I like the art style from the little bits of media Cryptic has provided.
3. Darkfall: niche of a niche of a niche. Arrogant statements from its maker make me want to avoid this. Also the graphics look pre-1999 quality. Also beware Norwegians bearing MMO's.
4. Blackstar: I really want to see this game come true. I'm encouraged that Spacetime got funding. But they've been cryptic about what the funding is for or the future of Blackstar.
5. Aion will not be a big success. Its story rings hollow for a western mind. (I have no sympathy for a people that worship an abusive and capricious and foolish god.) The death penalty will deflect MMO players used to WoW and WAR.
6. Guild Wars 2 will be really important. Arenanet has posted jobs for web marketing folks. More information will come out in 2009, and even a beta. NC Soft may want to rush this one out to make money and to rescue lagging interest in Guild Wars.
7. Star Trek Online: the IP is badly damaged but still viable. Art style looks nice. Not cooperating with other players running a single ship is a huge turn-off for me. My guild plans to try this one though so I'll probably by the box.
8. Star Wars Old Republic: even more damaged IP than Star Trek. Guild also plans to try this. So I'll buy the box. I love the art style. Story-focus could be annoying with guildmates jabbering in vent while I'm trying to listen or read a wall of text. That could get old fast. Hopefully business model will copy Guild Wars.

I chuckled when I got to the City of Heroes 2 part. I don't think that's very likely. NCSoft is sinking a bunch of money into the game, but the current speculation is that we'll be seeing a new box expansion. I'd say there's a good chance of that being announced in 2009, but no CoH2.

My credit card is ready and waiting for that. I still remember that marketing survey!

It boggles the mind to see that some people still think JGE is 'Eve-like'...do you people even read the reviews or visit the websites to check the features?? Eve is a simpletons space sim. Click here, click that target and its all gay arsed dice rolls and level modifiers.
JGE is a real space combat sim where it relies on how good you are with the joystick....not some pathetic random number generators.
I for one cannot wait ;)
Darkfall intrigues me. If they can deliver even half of what is promised it should be a pretty damned good game.
Stargate Worlds is the other main game I am looking forwards too. Here's hoping they can get it released 'feature complete'...but I would be willing to lay out my hard earnt if it was almost ready to go and help fund them to get it finished.

I'm looking most forward to two games that haven't been formally announced yet.
The first game being the one being developed at 38studios codenamed Copernicus (http://www.massively.com/tag/copernicus), which is being worked on by RA Salvatore, Todd McFarlane and Curt Shilling.
The second game I'm looking forward to is the one that Carbine Studios is developing (http://www.massively.com/tag/carbine-studios/). Developers who worked on Fallout, Blizzard titles, and Jeremy Gaffney (co-founder of Turbine and exec producer for City of Heroes are involved.

Coh2?
No chance of that.
Where are you getting any hint of such a thing?

Not a hope in hell of CoH 2. The biggest problems with CoH 1 involve the 3D models and textures being a bit stale; a good expansion pack will fix that.

Where - OH WHERE - is Warhammer 40K Online? Want.

Seriously, the writer could have picked something at least *hinted* at over making up a "COH 2." The "Original IP we've had in development (for about six years with nothing but a few pieces of art)" Cryptic's talked about has more substance to "Might be announced!" than COH 2.
COH 2 isn't an "opinion" when it comes to "Five MMOs to watch out for in 2009." If he'd said "Maybe a big boxed expansion with nice upgrades for COH?" Sure. I'd buy that as a possibility. But COH 2 is about as possible as, oh, "Falcon 4.0, the MMO Musical" for 2009.

Unless the writer is privy to information we don't have yet, which is entirely possible, given the nature of a site like Massively. Time will tell.
I, for one, am keeping my eye focused most keenly on Jumpgate: Evolution. As I've said many places before, JGE will be the home for all Descent / Descent Freespace / Wing Commander / X3 fans that also happen to like MMOs. It will also have some of the player-driven economy, fleet/squad combat, and mission-inspired gameplay elements of EVE, so it's honestly a good shooter-driven blend of the two styles of play into one game. And I'm looking forward to it. The RP community in Jumpgate classic was small but stellar, and I'd bet a respectable amount of money that a large percentage of EVE's player base will give JGE a try.
As diverse as the two flight models will be, I'd even be willing to suggest that most players playing EVE will likely continue to play EVE *and* play JGE, playing one or the other one the side as their tastes take them. JGE should not be taken lightly as a contender.
